The new initiative program is designed to support potential new programs, products, or services that will provide significant benefit to IEEE members, the public, the technical community, and customers, or which could have a lasting impact on the IEEE.
Initiatives must be of strategic importance to IEEE. The process allows submission of a proposal at any time during the year.
Overview of the IEEE New Initiative Program
IEEE new initiative proposals are submitted using one of two proposal forms.
- A New Initiative Proposal is typically expected to require US$100,000 or more for a 12-month period. However, any project proposed to the New Initiative Committee with a total budget exceeding US$40,000 will be considered a new initiative. Multi-year funding is allowable.

- The Seed Grant Proposal is for projects that are experimental, innovative, and require US$40,000 or less of funding.

All IEEE new initiatives that are submitted undergo a review by the IEEE New Initiatives Committee (NIC).
If the proposal is accepted:
- project funding will be immediately available;
- project reports will be made at least quarterly to the NIC, who will report to the IEEE Board of Directors and IEEE Finance Committee on status.
