Home  >  About IEEE

Welcome to the new Main Site (IEEE.org), the Web gateway to the world’s largest association for technical professionals and the primary communications vehicle of the IEEE. With a fresh design, the site includes many improvements to help its users find the information and resources they want more quickly and easily.

More than five million users from over 200 countries visit the Main Site each year. After extensive audience research and testing the site is now more representative of the breadth of IEEE. This new site is designed to better serve our users, whether a professional, academic, student, researcher, a member of the general public or the media.

Design

The site features a new clean visual design including:

  • a more consistent user experience throughout the site,
  • improved look and feel that better reflects the dynamic IEEE brand,
  • redesigned home page that provides a more content-rich experience; better showcasing up-to-date information related to a broad range of IEEE activities.

  • Enhanced landing pages that provide a contextual entry point for deeper level content and are a better representation of the content within the section,

The redesign process

The redesign process was informed by research to support data driven decisions for the improvements that were made.

  • Field research was performed to better understand the contexts in which our site is used.
  • Direction related to usability was informed by user card sorting and usability testing with iterative updates.
  • An accessibility review was conducted to determine if the site is usable by people of all abilities and in turn pages were better optimized for use with assistive technologies.
  • Six core personas, fictional characters that “stand-in” for actual users during the Web design projects, and three volunteer personas were created based on stakeholder interviews, competitive research, and member, volunteer, and non-member interviews.
  • Best practices were leveraged at all stages of the redesign in part through collaboration with firms renowned in the field including IBM Global Services, Tipping Sprung, and Gotomedia to just name a few.
