IEEE congratulates IEEE Life Fellow Mildred Dresselhaus on being named one of 19 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which is “presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.” The award is the United States’ highest civilian honor.

IEEE congratulates IEEE Life Fellow Isamu Akasaki and IEEE member Hiroshi Amano, who were awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics along with Shuji Nakamura, for “having invented a new energy-efficient and environment-friendly light source – the blue light-emitting diode (LED).”
