IEEE Strategic Research & Planning provides research services to the entire IEEE. Typical research projects examine the needs and opinions of specific groups, assess satisfaction levels, investigate new ideas, evaluate outcomes, or measure the effectiveness of products and services.
All IEEE departments should coordinate their survey efforts, especially member surveys, with the Research & Planning area for five primary reasons:
- To avoid "over-surveying" our members. We keep track of all of the members who are asked to participate in each of our surveys so that we can ensure that our members are not polled too frequently.
- To make the members' experience as pleasurable as possible. A poorly designed questionnaire can often irritate and frustrate our members. (See Getting Started for some basic tips on questionnaire design.) This can lead to members' lack of cooperation with future studies and general dissatisfaction with IEEE. Poorly designed research can also lead to misleading results and subsequently to poor business decisions.
- To prevent duplicate studies. We are involved in many research projects each year. It may be possible that the information you're looking for has already been collected or can be used to create a smarter, more in-depth survey.
- To leverage IEEE Research's knowledge, expertise and experience.
- Protect the research dollars of IEEE and make sure business decisions are made on sound research.
The goal of IEEE Strategic Research & Planning is to gain valuable knowledge regarding our constituents. We use the information gathered to better serve existing and future members and customers. Our sincere appreciation goes to each IEEE recipient who has received and responded to our questionnaires.
