The major goal of this project was to provide information to each Society that would allow each to make better data-driven decisions.
History/background
In 2003, for the first time ever, IEEE conducted a survey that included all 37 IEEE Societies. While each Society was provided with a specific detailed report, this aggregate report is meant to understand IEEE Society members as a whole.
This report:
- presents distinctive characteristics of Society members versus IEEE members who do not belong to an IEEE Society;
- identifies needs, interests, and satisfaction levels of Society members
- explores reasons why IEEE members maintain, cancel, or do not subscribe to IEEE Society membership.
Members’ understanding of the IEEE volunteer/staff structure is also examined.
Participants
- In June 2003, approximately 42,000 IEEE higher-grade members were invited to participate in a Web survey.
- These 42,000 IEEE members were comprised of 37 randomly selected from Society samples that were representative of each individual IEEE Society.
- An additional comparison sample of IEEE members with no Society membership was included.
- In total, 13,511 members responded, representing a 32% response rate.
