History/background

  • The 2004 All Society Research Project (ASRP) is the second study conducted for most IEEE Societies.
  • The first study, in 2003, examined current Society members and this study examines non-renewing Society members who renewed their IEEE membership.
  • While each Society received a detailed report specific to their Society, the aggregate report provides an overview of IEEE non-renewing Society members.
  • The research identifies the reasons for dropping membership, suggests improvements in product and services and possible strategies for membership growth and improved member retention, and improves our overall understanding of members and the value they place on Society membership.

Participants

  • The 2004 ASRP non-renewing Society membership project gathers data from individuals who maintained their IEEE membership but dropped their membership in one or more IEEE Societies for 2004.
  • Data collection began in June, 2004 when approximately 18,000 IEEE members who dropped at least one Society were invited to participate in a Web survey.
  • The stratified sample of 18,000 IEEE members used for the study was comprised of 36 Society samples that were representative of each individual IEEE Society.
  • In total, 5,717 former Society members responded, representing a 32% response rate. The full report contains more information about the sample.
