Find society membership statistics and non-member subscription statistics.
Society membership renewal statistics have been compiled into monthly spreadsheets that outline the activity between September and February (active renewal cycle) and the recovery period between March and August (following cancellation of non-renewed services). Details describing the data contained within the spreadsheets are provided in two separate documents as follows: September–February (DOC, 37 KB) and March–August (DOC, 37 KB).

*Note: Society Membership Subscription Statistics reports between August 2008 and January 2009 were deemed to have errors. Please use July 2008 figures as year-end 2008 subscription levels (which are only one month earlier than normal and therefore very close to reality). February 2009 membership subscription levels represent counts after un-renewed 2008 subscriptions were ended.
Because of the new business system, there are considerable differences in the way the data is captured, segmented, and presented in these reports. During the next months, some background information and hints will be included to help you with understanding and analyzing the data in this new report.
For example, one of the first results you will look for is total Society memberships. Because of the business rules in this new system, the December 2007 statistics may appear to have a relatively higher membership count than prior years. This is because these reports count members that have declined to renew their Society membership for 2008 as active until 31 December 2007 (these members are active members until the end of the 2007 service year). However, effective 1 January 2008, these memberships will be canceled for the 2008 renewal year and consequently will be eliminated from the January 2008 statistics.
Prior to 2007, the statistics reports removed these members from the active counts during the month (November or December) they declined to renew their Society membership for the following year, not waiting until 1 January. However, these members were active members until 31 December 2007.
Therefore, the BMS December 2007 stats reflect the active 2007 memberships as of 31 December 2007 but are not a good indicator of progress of 2008 renewals. January 2008 statistics will be a better indicator since the report will reflect the 2008 membership renewals received to date. However, as renewals continue to be processed, this number will be dynamic.
Throughout the year, you will be informed of other background information regarding the new reports. If you have any questions about the data included within these reports, please contact your respective Financial Analyst or Society Member Services or call +1 732 562 3900.
