IEEE-HKN Founders Day is an exciting opportunity for Chapters to communicate the message of IEEE-Eta Kappa Nu – and receive $100 from IEEE-HKN Headquarters for doing so!
In a shady spot under a large cottonwood, on the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, our founders saw the need for an honor society - one that by invitation would recognize scholarship, attitude, and character. The vision of these inspired young men was to promote the highest ideals of the engineering profession and form an organization where professionals and students help each other.
Founders Day is a way for us to share the Eta Kappa Nu story, raise awareness of the value that an IEEE-HKN Chapter brings to a University, show the many ways a chapter serves fellow students and the community, and encourage industry to support us. Today’s IEEE-HKN students are the leaders of tomorrow.
Please find a way to tell the IEEE-HKN story this October and celebrate Founders Day! Create an event or pledge activity, invite alumni back to campus, secure an IEEE-HKN speaker for a meeting, host a service activity, screen the IEEE-HKN classic recruitment movie, or hold a networking event to increase your contacts.
Make IEEE-HKN a trending topic! Tweet #IAMHKN to share your HKN story or experience! Together we can create awareness of IEEE-HKN and the value of our organization. Download a sample campaign image to use in your promotion (PPTX, 1 MB).
The Founders Day celebration is one day for all of IEEE-HKN’s 250 chapters around the world to share. Together, we will demonstrate the impact of our activities and promote IEEE-HKN across the world.
Plan an on-campus event on or around 28 October 2016 to promote your chapter and IEEE-HKN.
Each chapter who hosts a Founders Day activity and completes the required online form, including photos or videos from the event, will receive $100.
By participating in Founders Day, your chapter will:
You can order a Founders Day Kit filled with promotional items. To order your kit, please submit the Founders Day kit form. Please order by 14 October to ensure delivery in time for Founders Day. Artwork for posters and event promotion can be found on the IEEE-HKN website.
Poster examples are available for download.
If you are interested in writing an article about your Founders Day experience, contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Alumni Reconnect project helps Chapters reconnect with their alumni. Use Founders Day as an opportunity to invite alumni to a special event or movie screening, share your chapter memorabilia, invite them to join your Facebook or LinkedIn group, or send updates on Chapter developments. Note: Each chapter was sent a list of the alumni currently on file in the IEEE database. Some information may not be complete. Please compare IEEE-HKN Headquarters’ list to yours, update your Chapter’s list as necessary, and send a copy back to Headquarters so that the master database can be updated.
Thank You Reception
Use Founders Day as an opportunity to give a special “Thank You” to sponsors, speakers, corporations, and anyone else who has helped your chapter in the last year. Invite them to a special meeting or reception and share information about your chapter, the department, and recent graduates. Help set the stage for their participation and support in the coming year.
Once in the 1950s, and again in the 1960s, Eta Kappa Nu made movies intended to generate interest among high school students for careers in engineering. These films explored the topic of “What does an engineer do?”, and copies of the films are available for you to screen at your chapter. You can learn more about the two films, “Engineering: A Career for Tomorrow (1954)” and “Engineering: A Challenge of the Future (1968)” on IEEE-TV and IEEE-HKN’s own channel.
Special “Holiday” Celebrations
October is recognized as as national pizza month! Have your Chapter host a pizza party to meet prospective members, network with alumni, or just have fun. October is also recognized as breast cancer awareness month. Consider holding a fundraising event or partnering with a local organization to support this cause. IEEE-HKN Founders Day, 28 October, is also recognized as Chocolate Day. Hand out a sweet treat out on campus (or hold a chocolate-themed event).
Fulfill your chapter’s commitment to service by hosting an outreach event at a local school (elementary – high school), have an on campus event, or plan a visit to encourage young students to consider engineering. Lesson plans, engineering projects for young learners, and numerous resources can be found online.
