There are a number of ways that pre-university students can explore their career interests and begin preparing for an exciting career in engineering or technology. Selecting certain types of middle and high school course work and participation in programs and projects can guide and prepare students.
Student coursework
Here is a list of courses that pre-university students interested in engineering and technology should consider taking:

The most successful engineers and technology professionals know more than how to create new technologies – they also know how to effectively communicate with others. These professionals generally work closely with teams of other engineers, management, and/or clientele throughout the development of a product or technology. It is essential that students work on building strong interpersonal, writing, and communications skills before entering the workplace.
Beyond the classroom
There are many activities outside the classroom that can be helpful in preparing for a career in engineering or technology. A number of career path resources can be found in engineering books and publications, as well as online. The following brochures also provide more information about careers in electrical, electronics, and computer engineering fields.
Pre-university programs and projects are a great way to help students explore their interests, learn how to work in team settings, meet potential mentors, learn engineering concepts and have fun! Local science and technology museums may provide additional information about engineering as well as opportunities to get involved.
Professional societies and student groups can be a way to gain insight into engineering careers. By exploring the IEEE Societies and Technical Councils, students can learn a great deal about the different fields and career paths of IEEE engineers.
