Students from Copperbelt University, within the IEEE Zambia Section, will be working on their project, Digital Teaching Units, throughout the year of 2011.

 

Digital Teaching Units Project

Students at The University of Zambia and Copperbelt University in Zambia will be empowering secondary students by promoting ICT (Information and Communication Technology) knowledge for social change and implementing computer-aided learning with digital teaching units. These teaching units will act as learning stations with comprehensive, interactive tutorial web sites which cover such topics as science, math, art, logic quizzes, and the English language. The software will give users the ability to create distinct quizzes for subjects.
 
The designing and installation of these programs will be done by university students, along with IEEE member Dr. Hastings M. Libati and Macha Works, a non-profit organization that works with partners to help develop rural communities in Zambia. Project trainers will partner with the university students and CUCS (Copperbelt University Computer Society) to develop an interactive tutorial website and the teaching units. Reputable ICT partners will also help to provide university students with necessary experience to undertake the implementation of the teaching units and web sites.
 
Working with high school students at Mitanto High School in Kitwe, university students will conduct training workshops that cover the basics of computing, such an "introduction" lesson and one that familiarizes the students with internet usage. Competent CUCS members will give ICT-related talks to pupils of secondary schools on basic computer, computer networking, current ICT trends, and internet knowledge.
 
In order to provide substantial ICT awareness and successfully implement this project, CUCS stands ready to partner with local and international organizations that are promoting ICT in Zambia. Additionally, the university students will aim to set up and computer society clubs and strengthen pre-existing ones within the secondary schools. In the future, reading materials and consultation support will be provided in order to make the project and clubs self-sustaining.
 
Though presently lacking an IEEE student branch, one prospective goal is that the project will lead to an establishment of one within the Copperbelt University and the University of Zambia.
