IEEE Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD) is pleased to offer a new webinar on High Performance Computing for IEEE members. This webinar, High Performance Computing: Thinking Big!, will provide address the issue of how scientific problems can be solved on supercomputers and will encourage big thoughts as it relates to moving scientific computing applications to a new level of computation and science.
Date: 26 April 2011
Time: 10:00 am EST (-4 UTC)
Scientific computing often requires computation power beyond a single processor. Multiple processor systems are used in many applications today. The step from single and sequential scientific computing applications to multiple processor applications can be daunting.
Multiple processor applications require the processors to collaborate on solving a single problem. The application programmer needs to make sure that the problem is decomposed in such a way that it can be solved on multiple processors. Furthermore, the work load for each processor needs to be similar to achieve maximum performance. This process is called data decomposition and load balancing and is at the heart of high performance computing (HPC). Even when developers have been working on multiple processor platforms such as small clusters, the step to supercomputers with thousands of processors often requires rethinking of the computation approach.
This webinar aims at taking a look at the basic concepts of high performance programming and addresses core issues in developing applications for scientific computing on large-scale supercomputers.
IEEE GOLD is pleased to have one of our 2010 GOLD webinar speakers return to discuss High Performance Computing. Dr. Matthias Reumann's Survival Skills for Scientific Writing in the Academic and Professional Environments was one of the GOLD webinar program's most popular webinar offerings.
Dr. Reumann was born in Frankfurt/Main, Germany in 1978. He studied Electronics and received the MEng in Electronics with the Tripartite Diploma in 2003 at the University of Southampton, UK. In February 2007 he received his PhD from the Institute of Biomedical Engineering at the Universität Karlstuhe (TH). From June 2007 to June 2010 he was working as a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the Computational Biology Center, IBM TJ Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, USA.
Since June 2010 Dr. Reumann is working at the IBM Research Collaboratory for Life Sciences-Melbourne in Melbourne, Australia and holds an Honorary Senior Fellow position at the University of Melbourne. His primary research interests are systems biology, computational medicine and bioinformatics. His research work was awarded with the Wolfgang Trautwein Research Award by the German Cardiac Society and the Award of the German Society for Biomedical Engineering of the Family Klee Foundation in 2008.
IEEE GOLD hosts monthly webinars on professional development topics, including conflict management, project management, transitioning from an engineer to manager, scientific writing, and emotional intelligence, among others. These webinar sessions are presented by experts in their fields, recorded for on-demand viewing, and offered to the IEEE GOLD community as a member benefit.
The Mentoring Connection program is a member benefit for professional and Graduate Student members of IEEE.
