Consumer electronics
The US has a long-standing culture of repairing cars: there is a massive parts, documentation, and resale infrastructure built around using cars as long as possible. This is more challenging with electronics due to increases in complexity and model proliferation. Without subsidies, it's not economically viable to recycle electronics in the developed world. Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology deals with creation of useful/functional materials, devices, and systems of any practical size by manipulating matter at the nanoscale and importantly, by taking advantage of novel and interesting properties which arise solely because of the nanoscale. This is a broad, enabling technology that has impact on every aspect of the economic spectrum: electronics and computing, communications, health and medicine, energy, environment, transportation, materials and manufacturing, national security, etc. This talk provides an overview of nanotechnology, citing examples in several of the above sectors and a discussion of opportunities for the IEEE community.
