IEEE STEP was developed to provide a dynamic program for facilitating the transition from Student member to young professional by introducing the opportunities and benefits of IEEE membership during the onset of a STEM career.

STEP Manual

The STEP Manual provides information on how to plan and organize workshop activities to outreach to the transitioning student or graduating member. The manual contains a checklist, best practices, program objectives, description of the student elevation process, format and activities of the STEP workshop, and additional resources including Membership Development.

STEP funding

Funding is available for STEP activities, including the graduation reception for groups holding an event with a minimum of ten recent graduates. Basic funding will be provided at the amount of US$500, and additional funding may be available if additional recent graduates attend beyond 25.

Applicants are required to submit an application four weeks prior to their scheduled event. In addition, funding will not be granted to an event that has already occurred.

Once the application is submitted, the review process begins with an IEEE volunteer member evaluating the form. All STEP events that go on to be approved and funded by the STEP program budget must provide the following information two weeks following the event:

  • detailed write-up of STEP event (Word);
  • attendance report, minimum ten graduating IEEE members with numbers (Excel);
  • photos;
  • final summary of budget (actual vs. forecast);
  • copy of all advertisements used to promote the event (e-mails, invitations, posters, fliers).

Please be sure to take pictures of your event so that others can celebrate with you.

Registering STEP events as vTools meetings

vTools is a tool for managing Section and Chapter meetings and is sponsored by IEEE Membership and Geographic Activities (MGA). MGA serves the needs of IEEE members by supporting IEEE Sections, Chapters, and Branches and is responsible for IEEE membership and member development.

The vTools toolkit contains tools in various phases of development, from production to pilots to active development. One tool in the vTools toolkit can be used to register the STEP event as well as advertise and promote the event as outlined below.

Without the need for Web development, officers (IEEE reported Section and Affinity Group Chairs) can create meeting announcements using vTools and display them on your Web site. Members and the public may see and register for the upcoming meetings. This tool is in production for your use. You should register your IEEE STEP event via this IEEE tool.
