Free IEEE-USA eBook Offered as Special Benefit to IEEE Members
As a special benefit of IEEE membership, for the month of January, IEEE-USA is offering a free eBook, Launching Your Career: How to Make the Transition from the Classroom to the Office.

perspectives_on_innovation The second eBook in the Launching Your Career series, compiled by Abby Vogel, former IEEE-USA Communications Committee chair, and former IEEE-USA President, John Meredith, explores:
  • the difficult decisions recent graduates face in their search to find the perfect job;
  • their fears in transitioning from the classroom to the workforce;
  • and, their needs and desires to become leaders while having enjoyable and rewarding careers.
Vogel and Meredith’s collaboration prompted a series of Graduates of the Last Decade (GOLD), e-books directed at IEEE members who have attained their first professional degrees in the past 10 years. GOLD is an IEEE program that offers programs and services to graduating students, recent graduates and young engineers.

Other eBooks in the GOLD series Launching Your Career include:
  • Book 1: How to Find Your Perfect Job;
  • Book 3 - A Practitioner's Guide to Leadership;
  • Book 4: Lifelong Learning — Your Key to an Enjoyable and Rewarding Career.
Launching Your Career: How to Make the Transition from the Classroom to the Office can be downloaded for FREE through 31 January 2013. Non-member price is US$5.99.

In February, the IEEE-USA free eBook will be Launching Your Career: How to Make the Transition from the Classroom to the Office. When it comes to Humanitarian challenges, problems encountered in the field are usually approached with the cultural perspective and resources available in First World countries. This may be counter productive as a proposed solution may create additional problems. Instead the focus should be on three primary areas: When should we effect change? What’s cheap? What’s available?

IRA Charitable Rollover is Back!
The IRA Charitable Rollover provision was extended through the end of 2013 within the U.S. The “rollover” provision allows U.S. IRA owners, age 70˝ and older, to make federally tax-free charitable distributions up to US$100,000 per year per person from their IRAs directly to eligible charities, such as the IEEE Foundation. Charitable distributions must be issued directly from the IRA administrator and may be used to satisfy the annual IRA required minimum distribution. Visit ieeefoundation.org to learn more.

Join a Technical Community for Free
You can join one or more of IEEE’s Technical Communities at no charge. IEEE Technical Communities are a new way IEEE continues to focus on creating a "neighborhood" atmosphere where technology experts can collaborate on hot-topic issues.

IEEE Communities offer the ability for new ways to get the right technologists together, IEEE member or non-member. When you belong to an IEEE Community, you communicate and collaborate with people involved in cloud computing, electric vehicles, green technologies, internet technolgies, life sciences, smart grid, RFID or earth observations, and join in the dialogue. Each community offers resources which may include access to IEEE Web Portals, conferences, continuing education courses, publications, standards, news and announcements, keeping you abreast of research and development as they unfold.

Currently, there are eight technical communities in which you can participate at no charge. We invite you to learn more about these communities or join for free today.
