Free IEEE-USA eBook Offered as Special Benefit to IEEE Members

As a special benefit of IEEE Membership through 15 March, IEEE-USA is offering a free eBook, Starting Your Start-Up--Book 4: Pricing Strategies, written by Tanya Candia.

Book 4 The Starting Your Start-Up series is designed for engineers or entrepreneurs who have a product or service, but no marketing expertise. These guides help the readers understand the basics of starting their own businesses.

In Book 4, Candia tackles one of the most difficult tasks for an entrepreneur - pricing the product properly. She shares strategies that will help ensure that the pricing is not too high or low; will satisfy customers; and will help meet revenue goals.

Candia shares that strategic pricing is an opportunity for the entrepreneur to become a price “maker” - not a price “taker.” She states that it's dependent upon value to the customer; competitive pressures; and on the actual cost to manufacture and support one’s product.

Throughout the eBook, exercises and explanations will help entrepreneurs determine their initial target, understand the buyer, and develop a strong go-to-market approach.

Members can download Starting Your Start-Up--Book 4: Pricing Strategies for free through 15 March 2016. Sign in with your IEEE Account, add the book to your Cart, and enter the promo code FEBFREE at checkout.

In March, IEEE-USA eBooks will offer Shaping an Engineering Career – Book 1: Responding to Career Challenges-A Personal Journey, by Gerard H. “Gus” Gaynor.

IEEE-USA’s Shaping an Engineering Career eBook series documents the personal history of selected engineers, and describes their journeys in transitioning from entry-level employees to technology professionals or managers. Book 1 is the personal journey of author Gerard H. “Gus” Gaynor.

What Do You Propose?

The IEEE Foundation Grants Program is a vital element of the Foundation’s mission to enable IEEE programs that enhance technology access, literacy, and education. Thanks to the generosity of donors to the IEEE Foundation, in 2016 the Foundation will invest approximately US$325,000 in grants funding specifically to innovative and promising IEEE grassroots projects that raise awareness and understanding of technology and its impact on society.

If your IEEE Organizational Unit (e.g. Society, Council, Region, Section, Chapter, etc.) has a project worthy of IEEE Foundation grant funding under the theme: increase the understanding of technology and its critical role in meeting global challenges and improving the human condition, we invite you to apply for a grant.

So what do you propose? Applications are being accepted through 15 July 2016. A joint committee of the IEEE Foundation Board of Directors and the IEEE Life Members Committee reviews the grant applications. Your project could be among those selected to receive funding from the IEEE Foundation Fund or IEEE Life Members Fund. Funding decisions will be announced in December 2016. Please visit for more information.

IRA Rollover

At IEEE, we know that philanthropy is personal. We also know that, for many, a strategic financial approach to philanthropy can maximize impact while also supporting your personal financial goals. Therefore, we want you to be aware that the IRA charitable rollover law has been officially reinstated in 2016 and will remain in effect beyond.

Individual retirement account (IRA) owners over the age of 70½ may transfer to qualifying charities – including the IEEE Foundation – up to US$100,000 per year from their IRA, which counts toward one’s required minimum distribution for the year while at the same time avoiding taxes. What a great way to support IEEE and IEEE Foundation AND maximize the impact of your IRA!

If you are interested in this unique opportunity to enhance technology access, literacy and education, and support the IEEE professional community, or if you have questions, please contact IEEE Foundation at +1 732 465 5871 or

Ready to make a tax-free contribution that will help build a future through technology? You can download our sample request letter (Doc, 15kb) to submit to your financial institution. Please remember to share this with us as well so we can properly acknowledge your contribution.

IEEE History Center

IEEE members have played a huge role in shaping IEEE’s institutional history. Their careers and service encompass a set of invaluable and unique knowledge. The IEEE Archives is one of the IEEE History Center’s most important activities in preserving the history and institutional memory of IEEE. The archives’ main function is to act as a permanent repository for institutional records. The oldest documents in the archives date back to the American Civil War. All material in the archives is on a permanent retention schedule. The History Center is able to use these documents as an information source for historical questions, and routinely handles reference and research requests.

Most of the Center's resources are available online at the Engineering and Technology History Wiki.

If any member would like to make an appointment to see the archives or has a research question the IEEE History Center may be able to help with, email Nathan Brewer.

Title: Non-Gaussian Statistical Communication Theory
Copyright Year: 2012
Publisher: Wiley-IEEE Press
Topics: Communication, Networking & Broadcasting; Computing & Processing
Abstract: Since its inception in the late 1930s, Statistical Communication Theory (SCT) has grown into a major field of study, applicable to many branches of science. This authoritative and provocative text is a legacy left behind by the late Dr. David Middleton—a pioneer of SCT. His application of Non-Gaussian Space-Time methodology to SCT clarifies many unresolved signal and noise problems, especially those prevalent in sonar and radar signal processing.
