IEEE Foundation Joins Sister Engineering Societies in Giving Tuesday Challenge
Giving Tuesday The IEEE Foundation and its sister societies in the United Engineering Foundation (UEF) joined together in a campaign to encourage philanthropy among the societies’ members and within their individual professions.

The collaboration, named Engineer a Better World, embraces the Giving Tuesday social movement, which encourages a more conscientious and philanthropic consumer culture. Giving Tuesday is observed on the Tuesday immediately following the Black Friday and Cyber Monday consumer holidays, as a way to shift the public’s focus from spending to giving. The inaugural UEF Giving Tuesday Campaign will occur on 1 December 2015.

Donations raised by the IEEE Foundation on Giving Tuesday will help Engineer a Better World and fund vital IEEE Foundation programs in 2016. As the philanthropic arm of IEEE, the IEEE Foundation enables IEEE programs that: improve access to technology, enhance technological literacy, and support technical education and the IEEE professional community.

Free IEEE-USA eBook Offered as Special Benefit to IEEE Members

As a special benefit of IEEE Membership through 15 December, IEEE-USA is offering a free eBook, The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Licensure - Volume 1, compiled by Georgia C. Stelluto.

Licensure The Best of Today’s Engineer: on Licensure - Volume 1 is a compilation of articles that will help the reader understand why one should pursue licensure; the licensure process; exam development; and how to effectively study for and pass the licensure exams.

In the article, To P.E. or not to P.E.?, author Steven F. Barrett, Ph.D., P.E., a member of IEEE-USA’s Licensure and Registration Committee, gives an account of his personal quest as to whether to pursue professional licensure. The decision came when he realized that the positions he desired in the civilian world - department head or dean of an electrical and computer engineering department at a University - required licensing as a professional engineer. Even as a consulting engineer, he found he would be required to have an engineering license.

There are many other articles in the Best of Today’s Engineer: On Licensure- Volume 1, written by IEEE-USA Licensure and Registration Committee members who have been active for many years - in its effort to promote licensure to U.S. IEEE members.

Members can download The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Licensure - Volume 1 for free through 15 December 2015. Sign in with your IEEE Account, add the book to your Cart, and enter the promo code NOVFREE at checkout.

In December, the IEEE-USA free eBook will be Leading and Managing Engineering & Technology - Book 3: Building a Culture that Develops Leaders and Managers, by Gerard H. (Gus) Gaynor. Gaynor writes about such topics as: The Basic Organizational Culture, Building a Leadership Culture, and a Case Study: IBM’s Silverlake Project.
