Free IEEE-USA eBook Offered as Special Benefit to IEEE Members
As a special benefit of IEEE Membership for the month of May, IEEE-USA is offering a free eBook, Launching Your Career–Book 4: Lifelong Learning–Your Key to an Enjoyable and Rewarding Career written by John Meredith, former IEEE-USA President.

perspectives_on_the_management_of_technology This fourth eBook in the series is a guide for engineering students who are about to begin their careers, or the engineer who is just launching their career. Meredith shares a number of practical ideas and thoughts that can help make lifelong learning a priority in pursuing an exciting and rewarding career.

According to Meredith, technology is growing at an unprecedented rate. Global competition is driving companies to become more and more competitive, and engineers are challenged with keeping their technical skills current. It’s been estimated, Meredith shares, that “An engineer’s technical skills will be obsolete in seven years or less, unless they continue to upgrade their knowledge and skills.” He stresses that “a career that embraces a program of continuous learning will ensure that you have a successful career.”

Launching Your Career–Book 4: Lifelong Learning–Your Key to an Enjoyable and Rewarding Career can be downloaded for FREE through 31 May 2013. Non-member price is US$7.99.

In June, the IEEE-USA free eBook will be The Best of Today’s Engineer: On Career Transitions, a collection of articles from Today's Engineer that can help you handle almost any situation you might face in your career. Information on how to download this eBook will be available in the June issue of What's New for Students.

IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative - Applications Being accepted

Apply Now - IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative

Applications are being accepted for the 2013-2014 Academic Year for the IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Initiative (IEEE PES S+). The goal of the initiative is to increase the number of well-qualified, entry-level engineers in the power and energy industry. Under this program, recipients can graduate with recognition as an IEEE PES Scholar, receive up to US$7,000 in multi-year scholarships and gain career experience. The application deadline is 30 June 2013.

Additionally, the top IEEE PES Scholar from each of the six IEEE U.S. Regions and Canada will be selected as the IEEE PES John W. Estey Outstanding Scholar. These individuals will each receive an additional US$5,000 for school expenses (tuition, books, student fees, etc.), IEEE and IEEE PES Student Membership for 12 months and, a travel honorarium up to US$1,000 to attend the IEEE 2014 PES General Meeting.

For the first time, the program is being expanded outside the United States. Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to apply. The goal in 2013 is to have 700 completed applications and distribute 400 scholarships to undergraduate students in the United States and Canada.

To be eligible, an individual must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and reside in IEEE Region 1-7. Applicants must be enrolled full-time at a university or college with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). The higher education institution must have an ABET-accredited, 4-year electrical engineering program and offer undergraduate courses in power engineering. Engineering students early in their college careers are encouraged to apply, even if in June 2013 they have not yet declared electrical engineering as their major. In the third quarter of 2013, the individual must be enrolled in an electrical engineering program working toward a bachelor's degree.

To apply for the scholarship, or to learn more about the eligibility, selection and renewal criteria simply go to IEEE PES Scholarship Plus Web site.

Title: Electric Bicycles:A Guide to Design and Use
Copyright Year: 2006
Author: Morchin, W.; Oman, H.
Publisher: Wiley-IEEE Press
Topics: Components, Circuits, Devices & Systems; Computing & Processing (Hardware/Software); Power, Energy, & Industry Applications; Robotics & Control Systems; Signal Processing & Analysis; Transportation
Abstract: For much of the world bicycles are a transportation mainstay. Electric bicycles, powered by a rechargeable battery pack, are proven to deliver the highest possible energy efficiency, even compared to pedal bikes. A transportation alternative to fossil fuels, electric bicycles are fast catching on, in part because they don't require factory assembly. End-users can easily construct them with available components. The text in this book reveals important techniques, data, and examples that allow readers to judge various propulsion setups and estimate speed and travel distance.
