Engineering For Social Good
Students and young professionals are drawn to the field of engineering by the opportunity to make a difference in solving the world's problems. "Engineering For Social Good" has taken on new meaning as engineers work to find solutions to problems ranging from alternative energy to home lighting for territories without electricity. IEEE.tv talked to students at Microsoft's Imagine Cup finals, a contest encouraging student innovation, where IEEE members are judges. These students are innovating to create socially conscious products that can have a real impact. IEEE.tv also talked to Toby Cumberbatch, Electrical Engineering Dept, Cooper Union, New York to understand how to take a socially engineered product from concept to the real world. Cumberbatch and his students designed SociaLite, a real world solution that brings safe, inexpensive lighting to people living without electricity.
