President's Corner
by Jian-yu Lu, President UFFC

IEEE is the largest technical society in the world. It consists of more than 40 societies and councils with a membership over 400,000. The IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S), with more than 2,000 members, is one of the IEEE societies.

The UFFC-S sponsors three symposia annually:
(1) IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS)
(2) IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics (ISAF)
(3) IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium (IFCS)

More information on the UFFC-S can be found from the UFFC-S website at: www.ieee-uffc.org

The UFFC-S also has a Distinguished Lecturer program that is financially supported by the Society. Currently, we have two distinguished lecturers: Drs. Takaaki Tsurumi and Roman Maev. They can be contacted to schedule their lectures in your areas.

Volunteer Opportunities:
The UFFC-S is a volunteer organization. It seeks volunteers to help its committees and symposia. Interested individuals should contact the respective committee chairs and symposia leadership at: http://www.ieee-uffc.org/main/governance-adcom-2014.asp or, contact me via email: jian-yu.lu@ieee.org

UFFC-S Updates in 2014:
Since 2014, the UFFC-S has made progresses by providing more services to its members and communities. UFFC-S has held its first Administrative Committee (AdCom) meeting on May 12, 2014. A range of initiatives and actions have been taken in the meeting. For example: (i) starting 2015, $110,000 will be allocated to support some of the IEEE UFFC-S student members to attend the three annual UFFC-S conferences, (ii) $25,000 has been allocated for 2015 for the History Committee to acquire oral history of leaders of our technical areas, (iii) Dr. Patrizia Tavella has been selected as the 2015 and 2016 UFFC-S distinguished lecturer, (iv) starting 2015, the print version of the IEEE Transactions on UFFC will be discontinued to redirect our resources to other activities, (v) AdCom website has been improved and IEEE web based conferencing has been used to increase the effectiveness of the UFFC-S governance, and (vi) efforts are underway to enhance the educational activities of the UFFC-S.

In 2014, the UFFC-S has successfully held two conferences (by the time you read this, it will be three-see the Fall Newsletter for more): (i) 2014 Joint IEEE ISAF/IWATMD/PFM conference from May 12-16, 2014 in State College, PA, USA, with more than 500 attendees, and (ii) 2014 IEEE IFCS from May 19-22, 2014 in Taipei, Taiwan, with about 300 attendees.

CrossCheck has been implemented to check for plagiarism for all papers going into the IEEE Xplore.

UFFC-S website has been improved and updated. Works are underway to eliminate separate usernames and passwords to access restricted contents on the UFFC-S website and replace them with the usernames and passwords of the IEEE Web Accounts of IEEE UFFC-S members.

The 2014 IEEE IUS was held in Chicago, IL, USA, from September 3-6, 2014.
