Women In Engineering Event at ISAF 2014
by Reagan Belan, UFFC AdCom Student Representative for Ferroelectrics
-----------------------
In May, 2014, Penn State hosted Joint IEEE International Symposium on the Applications of Ferroelectric, International Workshop on Acoustic Transduction Materials and Devices & Workshop on Piezoresponse Force Microscopy. One of the personal highlights is the Women in Engineering (WIE) event that accompanies the official program of the conference and is hosted by IEEE UFFC Society President Dr. Jian-yu Lu. Over the past century, women have made great advancements in the science, technology, engineering & math (STEM) fields. While it is positive to see women's presence increasing in both a research and industrial settings, there is still a large underrepresentation in STEM fields and many various issues that still persist for women in sciences.

2014 International Frequency Control Symposium
by Sheng-Shian Li, Associate Newsletter Editor for IFCS
-----------------------
It was my great pleasure to serve as the Chair of the Local Organizing Committee for 2014 International Frequency Control Symposium (IFCS’14) in Taipei International Convention Center (TICC) from May 19th to 22nd. This position also significantly helps me, now as an Associate Newsletter Editor of Frequency Control, to report the details on the IFCS’14 for the UFFC news in this year. I have to admit this is not an easy job since it is the first time the IFCS was held outside of the US in its 67-year history. The General Chair, Dr. Wan-Thai Hsu, and I started to prepare for this event in 2012.

News from the Transaction on Ultrasonics
Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control

Highly Cited Emails
The Editor-in-Chief has been reviewing practices from other publishers. This led to the implementation of bi-monthly emails relating to highly cited articles and an alternating bi-monthly email conveying interesting articles titled “editor’s selection”. These are also catalogued on the society webpage. The highly cited papers are selected according to the monthly weighted citations of papers published within the last 1.5 years. Citation reports from Web of Science (Thomson Reuters), Scopus (Elsevier) and Google Scholar divided by the number of months that a publication was available online is used to rank the papers. As the number of citations does not always reflect the quality of a publication, another email is distributed bi-monthly comprising the editor’s selection of interesting articles.

The May 19 meeting of the Frequency Control Standing Committee convened in Taipei, Taiwan with 13 attendees present and one remote participant. Final financial results for the 2013 Symposium were presented. An update on the 2014 Symposium, commencing the next day, were presented and discussed. Notably, this is the first IFCS at which the pre-symposium Proceedings were completed; the process worked very well, including use of Crosscheck for detection of plagiarism. Some refinement is required to address very short papers, essentially little more than abstracts.

New Fellow On-line System
by Rosann Marosy, Manager, IEEE Fellow Activities-----------------------
The task of nominating a Senior Member for Fellow grade got easier with the new Fellow On-line System. Multiple upgrades were incorporated, but three main enhancements will please nominators. After a nominator logs in the system, the first requirement will be to input the nominee’s member number. Entering this information will immediately let the nominator know if the nominee meets the requirements of being an active IEEE Senior or Life Senior Member and if the nominee has been a member in good standing for five years or more. If a nominee is ineligible, the system will prevent the nominator from filling out the entire form and avoid any unnecessary time.
