President's Corner
by Jian-yu Lu, President UFFC

Greetings:
On behalf of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC-S), I would like to greet all of you and wish you a happy new year.

Join or Renew Your IEEE UFFC-S Membership:
IEEE UFFC-S has about 2,000 members and is one of about 40 Societies of IEEE that has over 400,000 members. IEEE UFFC-S covers a wide range of technical areas, as implied in its name. For those of you who are not an IEEE UFFC-S member or have not renewed membership, please join or renew the UFFC-S membership at

https://www.ieee.org/membership-catalog/productdetail/showProductDetailPage.html?product=MEMUFFC020

Volunteer Opportunities:
IEEE UFFC-S is constantly looking for volunteers to help its annual symposia (conference organizing committees, technical program committees, and helpers), and various governing committees. Interested individuals should contact respective symposium General Chairs or committee chairs listed under "UFFC Administrative Committee (AdCom)" at http://www.ieee-uffc.org/main/governance.asp

Three UFFC-S Symposia in 2015:
The dates and locations of the three 2015 UFFC-S symposia are given below:
(1) 2015 IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium (IFCS): In Denver, Colorado, USA, from April 12-16, 2015. (http://ifcs-eftf2015.org/)
(2) 2015 IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics
(ISAF): In Singapore, from May 24-27, 2015.
(3) 2015 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS): In Taipei, Taiwan, from October 21-24, 2015. (http://ewh.ieee.org/conf/ius/ius_2015/)

I would encourage you to attend the symposia above to meet your friends and colleagues and to exchange technical ideas.

UFFC-S Updates Since the 2014 January-August Issue of Newsletter:
(1) UFFC-S has recently gone through a 5-year review by IEEE. It was a successful review and the Society was commended being financially healthy and well-governed with many good practices.
(2) The IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency (TUFFC), the flag-ship journal publication of the UFFC-S, has also gone through a successful 5-year review by IEEE recently.
(3) The UFFC-S is excited to have appointed its first EIC-Elect (Editor-in-Chief Elect) of IEEE TUFFC, Dr. Peter Lewin, from Drexel University. Peter will succeed the current EIC of TUFFC as the term(s) of the current EIC expire.
(4) UFFC-S has approved to have two Distinguished Lecturers (DLs) each year, instead of traditional one, starting 2015. We are delighted that Dr. Susan Trolier-McKinstry from the Ferroelectric area has been selected as the second DL of 2015. Each DL has a tenure of 18 months.
Including Susan, there will be three overlapping DLs in 2015: Drs. Roman Maev (maev@uwindsor.ca, Ultrasonics area), Patrizia Tavella (tavella@inrim.it, Frequency Control area), and Susan Trolier-McKinstry (stmckinstry@psu.edu, Ferroelectrics area). The DLs are financed by the UFFC-S. Please take this opportunity to invite them to your institutions for lectures.
(5) Dr. John Vig, the 2009 IEEE President and current UFFC-S Vice President for Publications has been inducted to the IEEE Technical Activities Board (TAB) Hall of Honor "For improving operations and processes of the IEEE Technical Activities Board". Please join me to congratulate John. More information on TAB Hall of Honor can be found at:
http://www.ieee.org/about/volunteers/tab/tab_hall_of_honor.html
(6) New IEEE UFFC-S Student Chapter has been established in the University of Houston, Houston, Texas, USA recently, thanks for the efforts by Dr. Gangbing Song and his team. In addition, an application to establish the IEEE UFFC-S Chapter in Southern California has been submitted to IEEE for approval, thanks to the efforts of Dr. Qifa Zhou, the new UFFC-S Chair of Chapters Committee.
(7) The UFFC-S has now used IEEE Single-Sign-On (SSO) on the UFFC-S Website at http://www.ieee-uffc.org/ to allow IEEE UFFC-S members to access restricted materials. This means that the IEEE Web Account usernames and passwords of UFFC-S members can be used to access these materials.
(8) Recently, UFFC-S has started to use MailChimp (http://mailchimp.com) to communicate with UFFC communities for conference and other announcements. MailChimp allows UFFC-S to better serve its members and communities by increasing communication efficacy.
(9) In 2014, UFFC-S has its first representative to the Symposium on Piezoelectricity, Acoustic Waves, and Device Applications (SPAWDA).
SPAWDA is technically cosponsored by UFFC-S. The 2014 SPAWDA was held successfully in Beijing, China from October 30 to November 2, 2014.
