Fellows And Festivities

Winners past, present, and future

The Power Engineering Society Fellow Committee invites all members to consider nominations of colleagues for elevation to Fellow grade. Fellow grade is the highest grade of membership in the IEEE. Members cannot apply to become a Fellow, the most prestigious level of membership and a symbol of status in the profession. Candidates are nominated by their peers and recommended by existing Fellows. The process is open but rigorous. It is restricted to 0.1% of the total membership.

If a member has made significant contributions to the industry or the profession, it is time to consider a nomination for Fellow grade. The key qualification for a candidate for Fellow grade is contributions that have advanced the state of the art or the practice of engineering.

Members Are Encouraged to Nominate

There have been some recent developments to encourage more nominations across the entire spectrum of engineering disciplines and across all regions of the IEEE. A new category has been established: Applications Engineer/Practitioner. This category is for practicing engineers who have made an impact through development, advancement, or application of technology. And for candidates who practice in or are from Region 9, the IEEE has established the Fellow Reference Assistance Center (FRAC) to assist nominators for such candidates. The FRAC members, called case mangers, all Fellows, may serve as references but cannot serve as nominators. Nominators wishing assistance from the FRAC must initiate a request by sending an e-mail to FRAC@ieee.org. The case manager assigned will contact the nominator.

Obtaining the Nomination Form

The preferred approach is to submit forms electronically (see the IEEE Web site at http://www.ieee.org/fellow for nominations forms and instructions). While electronic nominations are preferred, it is still possible to obtain forms and instructions in hard copy. Send a request to fellows@ieee.org. Note that the deadline is 1 March 2007. Fellow Reference Forms from 5 to 8 Fellows are required by the same date.

Evaluation by the PES Fellow Committee

The PES Fellow Committee evaluates the technical contribution (described in Sections 6 and 7) of every nomination submitted to PES as the evaluating Technical Society. In Section 6, "Individual Contributions," the contributions made must be described in sufficient detail. Avoid the use jargon and do not use acronyms without defining them first. Do not repeat the descriptions documented in Section 7, "Evidence of Technical Accomplishment." Here, list three tangible items of evidence: papers, books, patents, or other items of evidence. For each item, individually and directly under its listing, clearly describe the significance of the specific contribution or advancement that is documented. Describe the originality, novelty, complexity, usage, distribution, and other characteristics. Finally, list other publications and items of evidence.

By completing the nomination completely and accurately and properly formatting and submitting it in time for the Fellow Referees to provide evaluations, the nominator has honored the candidate. The PES Fellow Committee is looking forward to your nominations.
