2001 EDS Chapter of the Year Award

On December 3, 2001, at the IEDM held in Washington DC, the AP/ED Bombay Chapter received the EDS Chapter of the Year Award which included a certificate and check for $1,000.

The IEEE AP/ED Bombay Chapter is a relatively new Chapter, formed in late 1999, and formally inaugurated on February 14, 2000, with Dr. Hiroshi Iwai, Chairman of the EDS Regions/Chapters Committee, and Dr. Renuka Jindal, Partner of the newly-formed Chapter, in attendance.

The major event during this period was the co-sponsorship of the symposium “VLSI: Systems, Design and Technology” organized in Bombay during December 9-11, 2001. This symposium attracted over 300 delegates. One of the invited speakers was Dr. Xing Zhou, who attended the symposium as a Distinguished Lecturer with EDS support. The Chapter also conducted two workshops during this period. These were a one-day workshop on “Microelectronics” conducted on August 27, 2000 at a local engineering college to acquaint the IEEE Bombay Section students with the recent advances in Microelectronics; and a half-day workshop on “Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS)” on March 21, 2001, conducted by Dr. Prakash Apte, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Both workshops were very successful, and were attended by about 150 persons.

The Chapter also conducted a Panel Discussion on “Careers in VLSI in India” on September 6, 2000. The panelists included 4 persons from leading VLSI industries in India, and 2 from academia. This event, which attracted about 150 people, was also extremely successful, and helped create awareness about exciting career opportunities in VLSI now available in India.

The Chapter arranged a screening of the 1999 IEDM Short Course videos on “Sub-100 nm CMOS” on August 29 and 30, 2000. This was attended by about 50 researchers and students working in the area of MOS devices. In addition to the above activities, the Chapter organized 12 technical talks and seminars on various aspects related to Electron Devices, which included two distinguished lectures.
