The William R. Cherry Award was presented to Richard J. Schwartz at the 2nd World Conference and Exhibition on Photovoltaic Solar Energy Conversion in Vienna, Austria, on July 6th. The conference incorporated the 27th IEEE Photovoltaic Specialists Conference. Dr. Schwartz is Dean of Engineering at Purdue University and was honored for his pioneering work in the analysis and design of high intensity silicon cells. He has held a number of positions since joining the Electrical Engineering Faculty of Purdue University in 1964, including Head of the School. Dr. Schwartz is a Fellow of IEEE and Chair of the Science and Technology Committee for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

The William R. Cherry Award was established in 1980 in recognition of the key role played by Bill Cherry in establishing solar cells as the ideal power source for space and for vigorously advocating development of photovoltaics for terrestrial uses. It is awarded during each Specialists Conference to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the advancement of photovoltaic science and technology.
