Welcome to the April 2000 issue of the LEOS Newsletter. As usual, this month's issue is filled with an assortment of technical articles, member Profiles and Society activities. To start out this issue, we first present an article by Brian Pogue, at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, who reviews recent progress, current trends and directions in biomedical photochemistry and photoimaging in live tissues.
Sarah Bolton and co-workers from the Physics Department at Williams College discuss their work on using nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to describe the behavior of ultrafast modelocked solid state lasers. Their successful results show the ability to analyze, predict and control the instability of a variety of lasers that will play important roles in emerging technological areas.
This month, we are also treated to two LEOS Profiles of our newest Board of Governors, Ursula Keller and Katsunari Okamoto. Kellers accomplishments are many, focused on the development of compact ultrafast modelocked solid state lasers using semiconductor saturable absorbing mirrors. Okamotos accomplishments are also quite numerous, focusing primarily in the area of research and development of photonic integrated circuits and optical components for optical communication systems. Both Okamoto and Keller are truly deserving of a LEOS Newsletter Profile.
From our Vice President of Publications, Robert Lang at SDL, Inc., takes a look at new potential objectives and directives for LEOS Publications, and how to better serve our members. As one possible example, the Newsletter is considering the addition of a new column entitled Editors Choice, which will highlight and summarize a recent technical publication from one of the IEEE LEOS Journals. This will allow the most significant research results to reach our members in the most timely fashion.
It should be noted that the 2000 Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics (CLEO) and the Quantum Electronics & Laser Science Conference to be held at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, is rapidly approaching (May 7th-12th). Dont forget to register early and secure your lodging arrangements. If the recent OFC conference is any indication, this years CLEO/QELS conference will be an exciting and memorable one.
Finally, IEEE/LEOS is still accepting nominations for many of their awards recognizing technical accomplishments in the area of electro-optics and lasers. Log on to the LEOS home page (www.ieee.org/leos) for more detailed information regarding the individual award categories and nomination forms.
See you at CLEO!
