In this issue, our "Hot Topics Section" presents two articles. The first Hot Topic is entitled "Ion-sliced single-crystal LiNbO3 thin films and their applications," by T. Izuhara, R. Roth, D. Djukic, A. M. Radojevic, and R. M. Osgood, Jr. at the Microelectronics Sciences Laboratories at Columbia University. The second Hot Topic is entitled "Photonic crystal fibers for transmission and optical signal processing" by C. Peucheret, B. Zsigri, K. P. Hansen, M. D. Nielsen, and P. Jeppesen at the Technical University of Denmark. K. Hansen and M. D. Nielsen are also affiliated with Crystal Fibre A/S in Denmark.
We are featuring a Profile of the IEEE-LEOS Secretary/Treasurer, Dr. Steven A. Newton. Dr. Newton was elected an IEEE-LEOS Fellow in January 2004. He is manager of the Measurements & Sensors Department at Agilent Laboratories, the central research organization of Agilent Technologies.
Two new members of the LEOS Board of Governors are featured in this issue. They are: Dr. A. Catrina Bryce and Dr. Wayne V. Sorin. Dr. Bryce is a Senior Research Technologist in the Optoelectronics Research Group at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. Her recent main research interests are in the area of III-V semiconductor monolithic integration of photonic devices using quantum dot intermixing Dr. Sorin is Chief Scientist at Novera Optics. He is currently working in the area of low-cost Wavelength Division Multiplexed-Passive Optical Networks systems to provide high bandwidth access for last mile applications.
Our Annual Special Issue in October will feature articles by invited speakers at the LEOS Summer Topical on "Optical Interconnects and VLSI Photonics."
