A special Awards/Conference Reception will be held on Monday evening at the LEOS Annual Meeting. The following awards will be presented during the Reception:
The IEEE/LEOS William Streifer Scientific Achievement Award will be presented to James J. Coleman for pioneering research in high reliability strained layer semiconductor lasers. Pallab Bhattacharya, Sethumdhavan Chandrasekhar, and Leda M. Lunardi will share the IEEE/LEOS Engineering Achievement Award for design and development of high performance 1.55 mm opto-electronic integrated photo receivers. Gregory Olsen will be presented the first IEEE/LEOS Aron Kressel Award for contributions to the development and commercialization of InGaAs detectors for communications and sensing applications. This years LEOS Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Melvin I. Cohen for 20 years of dedicated commitment to LEOS service and leadership, including the development of conferences and publications, the organization and management of Society affairs, and the recruitment of volunteers.
The Scottish Chapter has been voted Chapter-of-the-Year. Other LEOS chapter awards will be presented to Moscow Chapter for Most Improved Chapter, Ukraine Chapter for Most Innovative Chapter, and Central New England Chapter for Chapter with the Largest Membership Increase.
The 1999-2000 Distinguished Lecturers, Jens Buus, Richard DeLa Rue, Luke Maust, Klaus Petermann, Alan Willner, and Xi-Cheng Zhang, will be recognized for their service to the Society. Recognition as elected members of the LEOS Board of Governors will be given to Milton Chang, Katie Hall, H. Scott Hinton, and Robert Lang.
LEOS 99 best student Paper Awards will be presented to K.L. Den, D. Marom, and D.R. Wonglunsom. Of special interest will be the presentations of the IEEE Millenium Medals to Rod C. Alferness, Robert A. Bartolini, Gary C. Bjorklund, Steven R. Brueck, Robert L. Byer, Arthur N. Chester, Melvin I. Cohen, J.G. Eden, Michael Ettenberg, Thomas G. Giallorenzi, Concetto R. Guiliano, Kenichi Iga, Ivan P. Kaminow, Henry Kressel, Fred J. Leonberger, Paul F. Liao, Hans Melchior, David A.B. Miller, Suzanne R. Nagel, Donald R. Scifres, Peter W.E. Smith, Richard G. Smith, and Elias Snitzer.
