In this issue, we are pleased to present the fourth annual Special Issue of the IEEE-LEOS Newsletter. The goal of publishing an annual Special Issue is to provide LEOS members with an overview of research in a selected topic. This year, our Special Issue features articles by researchers who presented invited talks at the 2001 LEOS Summer Topical on July 30 through August 1 at Copper Mountain, Colorado, on the subject of Long-Haul DWDM Transmission and Networking. The two co-chairs of this conference are Dr. Jonathan Nagel at Terraworx and Dr. Gary Carter at the University of Maryland, and we hope that you enjoy reading the invited articles that are contained in this issue.
We are also pleased that this Special Issue is the first Special Issue to appear in color. We hope everyone had a chance to read and review last month's first color issue. Many thanks to Debbie Cantillo, the Associate Art Director, who designed our new look, and to Janet Dudar, Art Director, who made changes based on suggestions from the staff!
We really appreciate their work and would appreciate hearing your feedback on our design and on this Special Issue. Please send email to myl@watson.ibm.com.
