The 2001 Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC2001) will take place on June 18-22, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. The conference will cover new developments in all aspects of the science, technology, and the use of accelerators. It will also provide a communication channel for accelerator scientists and engineers and for those interested in the applications of accelerators. The conference is open to the public and all individuals with an interest in particle accelerators are invited to register and attend.
This is the 19th
biennial conference in the series and is organized under the joint auspices of the
Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) through its Nuclear and Plasma
Science Society (NPSS) and the American Physical Society (APS) through its Division of
Physics of Beams (DPB). The conference also serves as the annual meeting of the DPB. The
hosting institutions are Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), Fermi National Accelerator
Laboratory (FNAL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The conference is supported in
part by the U.S. Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation and the Office of
Naval Research.
The Conference Chairman is Yanglai Cho of ANL and SNS. The PAC2001 Program Committee, chaired by Gerald Jackson of FNAL, has already structured the conference program. Program, publication instructions and all other relevant information is available on the conference website at http:// pac2001.aps.anl.gov. The deadline for abstract submission has passed. The Proceedings, which is being edited by Peter Lucas, will be published as an IEEE Conference Record and will be available in hardcopy or as a CD. All abstract and paper submission should be through the Web upload system, however, authors are also required to bring a hardcopy to the conference.
To register for PAC2001, please complete the online registration form at the website, or submit the paper registration form available in the conference booklet or printable from the website. Whichever method is employed, a paper copy must be mailed or faxed with payment. The registration fee of U.S. $450.00 supports the conference almost entirely. A reduced fee of U.S. $370.00 is available to those who register and pay before May 18, 2001. This fee covers participation in the conference sessions, the welcome reception, the awards ceremony, coffee breaks, and includes a conference proceedings. The registration fee does not cover the banquet, companion tours or the ANL/FNAL tour. When signing up for these latter activities, an additional fee should be added as indicated on the registration form.
The organization of the technical program is similar to previous conferences in this series with plenary sessions on Monday morning and Friday afternoon. The opening plenary session will feature talks by Ozaki of BNL on RHIC Commissioning and First Results, Kurokawa of KEK on B-Factory Commissioning and First Results, Rossbach of DESY on New Developments on Free-Electron Lasers Based on Self-Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Ryne of LANL on Terascale Computing. The closing plenary session talks will include Quigg of FNAL on Particle Physics - Future Directions, Henning of GSI on Nuclear Physics - Future Directions and Moncton of ORNL on SNS - Final Design and Science Opportunities.
During the five-day period there will be 20 oral sessions with 77 invited speakers and selected contributed papers. Eight poster sessions sized to accommodate 1000 posters are scheduled. Accelerator systems are categorized by sessions on:

On Saturday, June 23, 2001, after the conference is over, there will be a tour of both Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL). Buses will depart from the Hyatt Regency at 8:30 a.m. and return to the hotel by 5:00 p.m. The ANL portion of the tour will include a visit to the Advanced Photon Source, the Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System and the Intense Pulsed Neutron Source. At FNAL, participants will tour the Linac, the Main Injector, the Tevatron and the CDF and D0 detector facilities. The cost of the tour, including transportation and lunch at the Fermilab Barn, is $25.00. Those interested should register in advance of the conference via the Conference Registration Form, available on the website, since space is limited. All non-U.S. citizens who are interested in taking the tour are required by the U.S. Government to provide citizenship information in order to be admitted to the Argonne National Laboratory site. The online or the PDF version of the Citizenship Information Form available on the website should be submitted no later than May 18, 2001 in order to ensure participation in the ANL/FNAL Tour.

Approximately 1200 participants have attended the last few meetings in the series and similar numbers are anticipated for PAC2001 in Chicago. A block of rooms at the Hyatt Regency has been reserved at the conference rate of $155/night, single or double occupancy. Due to the limited availability of rooms, attendees are strongly urged to reserve early, directly with the hotel. A page link is available on the conference website for making Hyatt reservations online. If making reservations by phone, be sure to indicate attendance at PAC2001 in order to receive the conference room rate. A limited number of government-rate rooms are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The conference has arranged a companion program. This begins on Monday morning with a Companion Get Acquainted Reception at the Hyatt Regency that will include a continental breakfast. Chicago weather in June is generally warm and pleasant with average daytime highs of 80° F and average nighttime lows of 58° F. There is frequently a lake breeze that reduces daytime temperature near the shore, sometimes by 10° F or more below temperatures farther inland. Chicago offers many cultural, historical, and ethnic attractions.
We look forward to seeing you in Chicago in June!
