Xiaochuan Pan

Xiaochuan Pan received his B.S. degree in nuclear physics from Beijing University, Beijing, China in 1982, M.S. degrees in atomic physics from the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica, Beijing, in 1985 and The University of Chicago, Chicago, IL., in 1988, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in atomic physics from The University of Chicago in 1991. He joined in the Department of Radiology at The University of Chicago as a Research Associate in 1991, where he became an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow for two years before his promotion to Assistant Professor in November of 1994.

While working toward his Ph.D. degree under Professor Ugo Fano, he made significant contribution to atomic physics by revealing theoretically and by demonstrating quantitatively that the high partial waves from long-range interaction contribute significantly to the collision cross section between an ion and an electron , thus eliminating the long standing discrepancies existed previously between the theoretical and experimental results.

Since joining the Department of Radiology at The University of Chicago, Dr. Pan’s research interests have centered on imaging physics and its medical and other applications. In particular, Dr. Pan has made important contributions to the algorithm development in the area of nuclear medicine imaging, computed tomography, diffraction tomography, image reconstruction and processing, and receiver operating characteristic analysis.  Dr. Pan has published more than 50 peer-reviewed original articles and more than 40 proceeding papers and authored several patent applications.

Dr. Pan has been a member of the IEEE and NPSS for a number of years.  He has served as a member of the program committees and a chair of regular sessions for numerous conferences, including the IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium and Medical Imaging Conference (NSS/MIC), the conferences of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and the IEEE Signal Processing Society. He has reviewed abstracts and papers for other conferences such as the IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, the SPIE Medical Imaging Conference, the International Conference on Pattern Recognition, and the Annual Meeting of American Association of Physicists in Medicine.  He has served as a reviewer for more than 15 journals such as IEEE Trans. Nucl. Sci., IEEE Trans. Med. Imag., IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, IEEE Trans. Biomed. Eng., Med. Phys., Phys. Med. Biol., J. Opt. Soc. Am., and Annals of Statistics and for different funding agencies and foundations.

The award was presented last October at the NSS/MIC Conference in Lyon, France.  His citation reads: “For significant contributions to the fields of g-ray emission tomography, diffraction tomography, x-ray computed tomography, image processing and reconstruction, evaluation of image quality, and atomic physics”.
