CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Let me begin with an invitation to all of you with interests in radiation instrumentation to become involved in IEEE/NPSS activities.  One of the avenues that is open is to step forward as a candidate for election to the Radiation Instrumentation Steering Committee (RISC). This committee includes 15 elected members serving 3-year terms that are chosen in an annual ballot by those members of our society who are identified as part of the Radiation Instrumentation Technical Committee (RITC). You are automatically a member of RITC if you are a member in good standing of both IEEE and NPSS and subscribe to the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science.  RISC has the task of acting on behalf of the full RITC membership in organizational matters, the most important of which is planning for future Nuclear Science Symposia (NSS). Meetings of RISC are scheduled annually at the time of the NSS, with most other business conducted via email. If you meet the criteria for RITC membership and have an interest in becoming a candidate for election to RISC, please let me know by July 15. (gknoll@umich.edu)

NUCLEAR SCIENCE SYMPOSIA

    1)  The 2000 NSS/MIC was held on October 15-21 in Lyon, France, the first outside North America.  Patrick LeDu did an outstanding job as General Chairman, and Stig Larsson contributed a great deal as MIC Program Chairman.  Bill Moses ably filled the role of RISC liaison to this conference.   This conference set a new record for attendance  at any NSS/MIC, and has helped raise the visibility of IEEE/NPSS in Europe.  Some inconveniences  were experienced in finding hotel rooms because of the unexpectedly  large turnout, but the first experiment in holding the NSS/MIC in a European setting was a positive one on balance.  RISC has acted to endorse formation of site selection committee for the 2004 NSS/MIC that will seriously consider another European location (see below).

      2) The 2001 NSS/MIC is scheduled for the Town and Country Hotel in San Diego on Nov. 4-10, 2001. Tony Lavietes  is General Chairman, Graham Smith the NSS Program Chair, and Ben Tsui will be MIC Program Chairman.

     3)  The 2002 NSS/MIC will be held in Norfolk, Virginia on November 11-15, 2002.  Joel Karp will be General Chairman, with Nigel Lockyer serving as NSS Program Chairman and Paul Kinahan as MIC Chair.  Contracts have been executed with two hotels (Norfolk Waterside Marriott and Sheraton Norfolk Waterside) whose combined capacity is required for adequate meeting space.

   4) A site selection committee (chaired by John Valentine) is in the process of visiting potential locations for the 2003 NSS/MIC, concentrating on locations in the Western U.S. Ralph James will be serving as General Chair of the symposium.

   5) The Radiation Instrumentation TC, together with the Nuclear Medical Science and Imaging TC, have encouraged exploration of possible sites in Europe for the 2004 NSS/MIC.   A Site Selection Committee, chaired by Erik Heijne, will be responsible for evaluating proposals put forward for European sites. A recommendation to go forward, or to plan instead for a U.S. location, will be due on July 1 of this year.
