The 2001 Particle Accelerator Conference (PAC2001) was held on June 18-22, 2001, at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. This edition of the biennial conference was again sponsored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) through its Nuclear and Plasma Science Society (NPSS) and the American Physical Society (APS) through its Division of Physics of Beams (DPB).
Yanglai Cho of ANL and SNS served as Conference Chairman while Catherine Eyberger of ANL served as Conference Coordinator. The conference attracted 1210 registered attendees who were drawn by 1610 submitted abstracts. The PAC2001 Program Committee, chaired by Gerald Jackson of FNAL, organized a broad program with 2 plenary, 18 oral and 8 poster sessions. More than 1350 papers have been submitted for publication in the conference proceedings. The Proceedings, which is being edited by Peter Lucas, will be published as an IEEE Conference Record and will be available in hardcopy or as a CD. An industrial exhibit with 52 vendor booths invited interaction with conference participants with its location adjacent to the poster area.
At the Awards Reception and Ceremony on Tuesday, June 19, a number of awards were presented. On behalf of the NPSS, President Peter Winokur presented the IEEE NPSS Particle Accelerator Science & Technology Award to John T. Seeman, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, for his outstanding leadership of the accelerator physics of the design, construction and commissioning of the highly successful PEP II positron-electron asymmetric collider and to Lloyd M. Young, Los Alamos National Laboratory, for his invention, development, and beam line operation of the resonantly-coupled RFQ structure and the methods used to tune it and other RFQ structures.
Chicago weather was pleasant for much of the week and particularly suitable on Saturday, June 23, 2001, after the conference, for a tour of both Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL).
