| Shiming Zhang Phelps Grant Recipient |
Shiming Zhang is completing his studies in electrical engineering at Auburn University, where he has been performing research on the effects of radiation on SiGe Heterojunction Bipolar Transistors (HBTs). He expects to receive his PhD this fall. Shiming has authored 25 publications, was the first author on six of these, and recently presented a paper entitled The Effects of Proton Irradiation on SiGe:C HBTs at the Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) in Vancouver. Shiming was nominated by his professor, Dr. John D. Cressler.

| James Felix Phelps Grant Recipient |
James Felix is in the process of completing his Masters Degree in electrical engineering at Vanderbilt University. He currently holds Bachelors degrees in both Math and Physics. Jims research at Vanderbilt is focused on exploring charge trapping in silicon dioxide films, used in the manufacture of integrated circuits. Jim was first author of a paper entitled Bias and Frequency Dependence of Radiation-Induced Charge Trapping in SiO2, presented at the 2001 NSREC. He was nominated by his professor, Dr. Daniel M. Fleetwood.
At the opening sesson of the NSREC short course (July 16, 2001), both students were presented with the Phelps Grant. The grant included tuition for the short course and a check for $500.
It should be noted that both students have submitted papers for publication in the December 2001 issue of the Transactions on Nuclear Science. Both are members of IEEE and NPSS.
The purpose of the Phelps Grant is to promote continuing education and encourage membership in the Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society (NPSS). The basis for judging is exceptional promise as a graduate student working in the fields of the NPSS, exceptionally good work in those fields, and an expectation that attendance at an NPSS-sponsored short course will result in an improved possibility of obtaining a job.
Professors should consider nominating their most promising students before March 15. Forms can be found on the NSREC web site (www.nsrec.com).
Dale Platteter serves as Chairman of the Radiation Effects Steering Group, which oversees the NSREC Conference. He is technical chair of the NPSS Radiation Effects Committee. Dale can be reached at NAVSEA Crane, Code 605, Building 2088, Crane, IN 47522; Phone 812-854-1206; Fax 812-854-1751, Email: platt@ieee.org.
