On behalf of the NMISTC,
I would like to express my deepest sympathy to Carolyn Hoffman and
the Hoffman family for the loss of Dr. Edward J. Hoffman. We are
all saddened by his passing, and we have lost a great researcher,
mentor, teacher and friend. We are thankful for all his contributions
as a researcher and for his work within the IEEE.
For the second time, the annual NSS/MIC will be held in Europe.
The conference will be held October 16-22 in Italy at the Ergrife
Palace Hotel, located just outside the center of Rome. The exciting
program for this year has been organized by Dr. Alberto Del Guerra
(University of Pisa), the General Chair of the conference, Dr. Fabio
Sauli (CERN), the NSS program chair and Dr. Sibylle Ziegler (Technische
Universität, München), the MIC program chair.
At the MIC conference, more than 550 papers will be presented in
10 oral sessions and 4 poster sessions, which is an increase from
previous years. As usual there will be a number of short courses
offered during the conference as well as a workshop on Nuclear Radiography
of Breast Cancer organized by Drs. Craig Levin and Martin Tornai.
In addition to the scientific program, there will be a number of
social events, such as the conference reception at the Villa Miani
and the traditional MIC banquet. A tradition at the MIC is the presentation
of various awards. Since this is an even year, the NMISTC will present
the Medical Imaging Scientist Award, which was last given to Dr.
Edward J. Hoffman in 2002. More detailed information regarding the
meeting can be found at the conference web site: http://nss-mic-rtsd-2004.df.unipi.it/nsshome2004.html.
In 2005, the NSS/MIC will be held in at the Wyndham El Conquistador
Resort in Puerto Rico (October 23-29). Dr. Tom Lewellen (University
of Washington) will be the General Chair and Dr. Simon Cherry, MIC
chair. The planning for the meeting is going well and more information
on this meeting can be found at the conference web site:http://www.nss-mic.org/nss2005.html.
In 2006, the conference will be held at the Town and Country Inn
in San Diego (October 29-November 5), where Dr. Graham Smith will
be the General Chair.
One of the bodies within the IEEE responsible for medical imaging
related activities is the Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Technical
Committee or NMISTC. All IEEE NPSS members who have expressed interest
in being a part of NMISTC are NMISTC members. The NMISTC is managed
by the Nuclear Medical and Imaging Sciences Council (NMISC), which
has 15 members elected from the general membership of the NMISTC.
Five people are elected to the NMISC each year, and each person
is elected to a 3-year term. One of the main functions of the council
is to oversee the MIC portion of the annual NSS/MIC. This includes
the selection of conference committees and chairs, the development
of short courses and other educational activities at the conference.
More information about the NMISTC and the NMISC can be found at:
http://ewh.ieee.org/soc/nps/nmisc.
At the end of this year, the following NMISC member's terms expire:
Margaret Daube-Witherspoon, Lars Eriksson, Steve Meikle, and Charles
Stearns. I would like to thank them for their contributions and
work on the council. By now you should have received the ballots
for the election of five new members. Please be sure to fill out
and return the ballots before the deadline. If you would like to
become more involved in this technical committee, please do not
hesitate to contact me.
I look forward to seeing you in Rome in October!
