Chair, NPSS Nominations and Appointments Committee

The Administrative Committee (Ad Com) of the NPSS promotes research and development in the nuclear and plasma sciences by promoting and overseeing NPSS conferences and publications as well the development, writing and lifetime management of standards. In addition, the Ad Com manages the nomination of candidates and the selection of recipients of NPSS awards.

One of the groups of members serving on Ad Com are the elected members. There are 16 elected members at any one time who serve for four-year terms. Thus, each year there is a Society-wide election for four positions.

The NPSS is a somewhat unusual society in the IEEE as it has a number of Technical Committees in the Ad Com, currently 9, which act as mini-societies in many respects but by working closely together give a broader strength to each. In order to ensure that the elected members of Ad Com reflect the technical interests of the members of NPSS as a whole, we carry out a membership technical interest survey every few years and re-apportion the fields that each elected member represents. In fact, a survey was carried out in 1999. In June of that year Ad Com unanimously passed a motion that determines the distribution of elected Ad Com seats for the coming few years, that is, until the next survey is carried out.

In 1998 the NPSS Bylaws were changed to establish a Transnational Functional Committee, whose Chairperson shall be elected as a member-at-large of Ad Com. Candidates for this position may not be from the United States or Canada. The objective of this Bylaw change is to ensure that there will be international representation on Ad Com. In 2000 NPSS will elect its first Transnational Member-at-Large to serve as an elected Ad Com member.

To make the balance correct, we are thus seeking candidates for the year 2000 election to Ad Com who represent the fields of:

It is the responsibility of elected members to generally take part in the administration of the Society and attend the three meetings of the Ad Com each year. The Ad Com administers a substantial budget and is ultimately responsible for the technical success of the Society. In order to ensure that Ad Com has active members, there is a provision in the bylaws for elected members who miss three meetings in a row with no extenuating circumstances to be replaced.

You can nominate yourself or a colleague. Please contact me, Ronald Jaszczak, by phone at +1 919 684 7685, by fax at +1 919 684 7122, by e-mail at rjj@dec3.mc.duke.edu, or by regular mail at Duke University Medical Center, Department of Radiology, DUMC-3949, Durham, NC 27710. There is a short nomination form to fill out which will require Name, Address, phone number, fax number, e-mail address and IEEE membership number. Also the field of interest represented, a short biographical sketch, one paragraph or 15 lines, and a short statement of why the nominee wants to be elected to Ad Com. In addition, a statement from the nominee of willingness and ability to serve is required.

All nominees must be members in good standing of the NPSS and IEEE. Affiliate members of NPSS must change their membership to regular members to stand for election and non-members may join the IEEE and NPSS in order to stand. Necessary membership changes can be made in parallel with nomination. Because the IEEE is a trans-national organization, we especially welcome nominees from outside North America.

The deadline for normal nominations is June 1st, 2000. Between June 1st and July 1st , 2000, additional nominations may be submitted by petition to the NPSS President Igor Alexeff. The petition must be signed by 20 NPSS members in good standing or by 5 Ad Com members.

Igor Alexeff can be reached at the Electrical Engineering Department, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN 37996-2100; Phone: +1 615 974 5467; E-mail: i.alexeff@ieee.org

The above announcement is in accordance with the constitution and bylaws of the NPSS.
