This past year, the Radiation Effects Steering Group (RESG) and the Nuclear and Space Radiation Effects Conference (NSREC) undertook many "firsts," as we moved into the electronic (paperless) world of the new millennium. The year 2000 marked our first attempt at on-line conference registration via the web site, distributing abstracts/summaries to reviewers via email, eliminating 35mm color slides at the NSREC, allowing computer-projected PowerPoint presentations, requiring electronic manuscript submission to the Guest Editor, and eliminating "camera ready copy" for the TNS.

It was not our intent to change so quickly. And it happened very smoothly (well, most of the time), but not without some growing pains. Our session chairs, authors, and conference attendees all had to learn several new electronic processes, just to participate in the annual July meeting. As engineers and scientists, we adapted to these changes very fast. Why? It’s our calling in life to be creative and to solve new problems. Of course!

The executive committee of the ‘NPSS Radiation Effects Committee’ is more commonly known as the Radiation Effects Steering Group (RESG). The RESG is made up of elected and appointed members from the radiation effects community. Our new membership for 2000-01 is as follows:

Elected RESG Members:

Chairman: Dale Platteter, NAVSEA Crane

Executive Vice-Chairman: Ronald Schrimpf, Vanderbilt University

Secretary: James Schwank, Sandia National Laboratories

Past Chairman: Klaus Kerris, Army Research Laboratory

Senior Member-at-Large: James Kinnison, JHU / Applied Physics Lab

Member-at-Large: Fred Sexton, Sandia National Laboratories

Junior Member-at-Large: Dave Hiemstra, Macdonald Dettwiler

Functional Committees:

Vice-Chairman, Technical Publications: Nick van Vonno, Intersil Corporation

Vice-Chairman, Publicity: Teresa Farris, Aeroflex UTMC

Vice-Chairman, 2000 Conference: Ronald Pease, RLP Research, Inc.

Vice-Chairman, 2001 Conference: Marty Shaneyfelt, Sandia National Laboratories

Vice-Chairman, 2002 Conference: Ken Hunt, Vanderbilt University/AFRL

Vice-Chairman, 2003 Conference: Allan Johnston, Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Special IEEE/NPSS members:

Editor, Transactions on Nuclear Science: Paul Dressendorfer, Sandia National Laboratories

NPSS AdCom Member: Mark Hopkins, The Aerospace Corporation

NPSS AdCom Member: Peter Winokur, Sandia National Laboratories

NPSS AdCom Member: Kenneth Galloway, Vanderbilt University

RADECS Liaison: Robert Ecoffet, CNES

These are just a handful of the volunteers who support the NSREC. The ‘real work’ is done by hundreds of authors, reviewers, our guest editors, and session chairman, too many to mention here. Their names can be found in the front section of each December TNS. These are the people who make changes happen.
