IEEE/OES Membership

IEEE is the world’s largest technical society, bringing members access to the industry’s most essential technical information, networking opportunities, career development tools, and many other exclusive benefits.
Membership in the IEEE is open to individuals who by education or experience give evidence of competence in an IEEE designated field of interest. The designated fields are, in broad terms: Engineering, Computer Science and Information Technology, Physical Sciences, Biological and Medical Sciences, Mathematics, Technical Communications, Education, Management, Law, and Policy.
The Oceanic Engineering Society (OES) focuses on all aspects of science, engineering, and technology that address research, development, and operations pertaining to all bodies of water. This includes the creation of new capabilities and technologies from concept design through prototypes, testing, and operational systems to sense, explore, understand, develop, use, and responsibly manage natural resources. Your OES membership brings you:

  • IEEE Journal of Oceanic Engineering (print & electronic)
  • Society Newsletter

To join IEEE, the best way is to apply on-line at www.ieee.org/join. Alternately, detach the paper application in this newsletter, fill it out and mail it to the address on the application form.
If you have any questions about membership or the application process, please contact the membership coordinator, Elizabeth Creed at elcreed@ieee.org.

Senior Member Elevation
IEEE defines the following membership grades: Student, Affiliate, Associate, Member, Senior Member, Fellow, and Life Member. The grade of Senior Member is the highest for which application may be made and requires experience reflecting professional maturity. For admission or transfer to the grade of Senior Member, a candidate must be an engineer, scientist, educator, technical executive, or originator in IEEE-designated fields for a total of 10 years and have demonstrated 5 years of significant performance. The benefits of senior membership include:

  • Recognition: The professional recognition of your peers for technical and professional excellence.
  • Senior Member Plaque: Since January 1999, all newly elevated Senior Members have received an engraved Senior Member plaque to be proudly displayed for colleagues, clients and employers to see. The plaque, an attractive fine wood with bronze engraving, is sent within six to eight weeks after elevation.
  • US$25 Coupon: IEEE will recognize all newly elevated Senior Members with a coupon worth up to US$25. This coupon can be used to join one new IEEE Society. The coupon expires on 31 December of the year in which it is received.
  • Letter of Commendation: A letter of commendation will be sent to your employer on the achievement of Senior member grade (upon the request of the newly elected Senior Member).
  • Announcements: Announcement of elevation can be made in Section/Society and/or local newsletters, newspapers and notices.
  • Leadership Eligibility: Senior Members are eligible to hold executive IEEE volunteer positions.
  • Ability to Refer Other Candidates: Senior Members can serve as a reference for other applicants for Senior Membership.
  • Review Panel: Senior Members are invited to be on the panel to review Senior Member applications.

We encourage all members of OES who meet the qualifications of senior membership to apply for it. OES will act as the nominator for those wishing to apply. Complete information and an application form can be found online at www.ieee.org/web/membership/senior-members. Members applying for elevation to senior member can contact Elizabeth Creed, elcreed@ieee.org, if they have any questions.
