AdCom actions,
August 28, 1998

The Administrative Committee of the Society took a number of actions when they met in San Francisco August 28, 1998.

The following actions are detailed more fully elsewhere in this newsletter:

Chapters Committee ... The AdCom voted financial support for the 9 existing and new SSCS chapters. See details in "Chapters Update" page 11 by Jan Van der Speigel.

Distinguished Lecture Program ... A Distinguished Lecturers Program was funded by AdCom. See details in "Distinguished Lecturers A New Attraction for SSCS Chapters" page 11 by Dick Jaeger.

Journal Archives on CD-ROM ... The AdCom funded the production of CD-ROMs covering all JSSC issues. See details in "JSSC for 1989-94" page 14 on CD-ROM.

Educational Workshops on CD-ROM ... The AdCom funded a pilot CD-ROM of a Society sponsored tutorial. See details in "Educational Activities Committee Starts Pilot Program CD-ROMs of Workshops and Conferences" page 5.

Other Actions:

Publication Committee

The JSSC best paper award was increased to $1000 from $500. The AdCom endorsed three manuscripts for publication by the IEEE Press Books. The AdCom decided not to support the Circuits and Devices Magazine; other Societies will continue to sponsor this magazine.

Meetings Committee

Technical co-sponsorship of the International Symposium on VLSI TSA in Taiwan will continue in 1999, and the Society will begin technical co-sponsorship of the 1999 Mixed Signal IC Design Conference. The Society will provide financial co-sponsorship of the 1999 ASIC Conference.

Other actions

IEEE allows affiliate members to join a Society without joining IEEE. SSCS will not promote this membership category but also will not exclude affiliates.

A budget for 1999 was adopted. Due to conservative practices in budgeting and increased costs of member services, the 1999 budget was adopted with a deficit of $127.1K not including any capital appreciation of the Society reserves. Although fees and dues could be increased, AdCom has intentionally limited increases to keep member costs down. In practice year-end actuals are seldom in the red. See "Society Finances are Robust" by Lew Terman SSCS Newsletter October 1998.
