IEEE Releases Upgrade to IEEE Xplore®
JSSC Article the One-Millionth Document Posted

IEEE Publications is pleased to announce the latest update to the IEEE Xplore online delivery platform.
Late December, in the middle of the Christmas and New Year holiday season, staff posted the most significant update to IEEE Xplore since it was relaunched at the IEEE Data Center in Piscataway in December 2002.
This update, labeled Release 1.6, could also be called “setting the stage for future navigation” because it lays a foundation for even more development in 2004, including full-text search capabilities and more personalized services.
A major part of the update includes upgrading to the latest Verity search engine, K2 Enterprise. Other significant features include a dynamic subscription identifier icon and the beginning of complete online coverage of content that also appears in the printed edition. These features, and others, help end-users better understand their subscription needs to get at more available content online.
With this new release, we also are very proud to load our one-millionth document onto IEEE Xplore. The article, “Novel Frame Buffer Pixel Circuits for Liquid-Crystal-on-Silicon Microdisplays,” from the January 2004 issue of the Journal of Solid-State Circuits was designated as the one-millionth document posted to IEEE Xplore this week. In celebration, a copy of the article will be made available for free for a limited time from the IEEE’s main Web site. You can find the press release by clicking on the “One-Millionth Document” button located on IEEE Xplore’s home page.
This is a major milestone for the IEEE and IEEE Xplore. We congratulate all of our authors, editors, societies, volunteers, and staff for making this effort possible.

1. Search Software Upgraded to Verity® K2 Enterprise
IEEE Xplore’s new and improved Verity K2 search infrastructure enables enhanced search functionality. With the addition of Verity K2, users will notice search terms highlighted in abstract records and the option for searching within your search results set.

2. Dynamic Subscription Icon: Your access to full-text documents

IEEE Xplore’s new subscription icon appears on search results to indicate the user’s access to full-text documents. This new icon will be displayed for online institutional subscribers to the IEEE All-Society Periodicals Package (ASPP), IEEE Proceedings Order Plan (POP), IEEE Proceedings Order Plan All (POP ALL), and the IEEE Information Technology Library (ITeL). IEEE members will also see the new icon for documents included in their personal IEEE online subscriptions.

3. Title History for Related IEE Journals and Magazines
Like the IEEE journals and magazines, the IEE (Institution of Electrical Engineers) titles are now organized to show the relationship between current and former titles. This improvement helps users easily follow the history of a specific title, including available years, within the journal and magazine table of contents and on each publication’s volume/issue listing.

4. Ask*IEEE Links Available for IEEE Engineering Management Review
The IEEE Engineering Management Review contains some reprint articles for which IEEE does not hold the copyright; therefore, the articles are not included in IEEE Xplore. Users now have the option of purchasing these documents of interest by selecting the “Buy via Ask*IEEE” link in the Abstract or Abstract Plus record. The Ask*IEEE Document Delivery Service, powered by Infotrieve Inc., opens a new browser window that provides brief details about the service and includes the document’s bibliographic information.

5. Table of Contents Alerts for IEE Titles
Like IEEE titles, users can now stay current by receiving email notification when an IEE journal or magazine title of interest becomes available in IEEE Xplore. Users will always receive just one email message at a time with direct links to each issue’s table of contents. The table of contents alert service is free to all guests and subscribers, but access to the full text of any document depends on an online subscription.

6. IEEE Includes Cover-to-cover Material in IEEE Xplore
For the first time, IEEE will include cover-to-cover material in IEEE Xplore. Starting with 2004-published IEEE periodicals, users will see links in the issue’s table of contents for items such as letters to the editor, editorial boards, and calls for papers. Material containing both an Abstract and full-text link will be searchable, so hits for this material will be displayed in search results. Material containing a full-text link only will not be searchable.
Note: Advertisements included in the print publication are not yet available online.

7. Request Reuse Permissions with the CCC Rightslink Service
With the inclusion of a new Rightslink icon in all Abstract Plus records, users can quickly and conveniently obtain permission to re-use an article or paper from the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC). Simply click on the Righstlink icon for the document of interest to initiate the service. The CCC Rightslink Permissions service handles the entire transaction outside of IEEE Xplore.

8. New This Week—Archive List Now Available
IEEE Xplore is updated each week with new content from journals and magazines, conference proceedings, and standards. In addition to the four-week rolling list of recent content updates, users can now check the “New This Week Archive” for previous updates.

9. Forward Links—Display Enhancement
The IEEE Xplore forward linking feature allows users ease of navigation in following their research. By selecting the “Documents that cite this document” link within the Abstract Plus record, a user sees the list of IEEE documents in the database that cite the document currently being viewed. This feature has been improved to deactivate the link when there are no available citing documents in IEEE Xplore.

10. Reference Links Available for IEEE Magazines
Abstract Plus records for most IEEE journals and for most IEEE magazines published since 1996 contain reference lists. Reference lists include Abstract and full-text links to IEEE and IEE documents (journal/magazine articles, conference papers, or standards) within IEEE Xplore. Access to the referenced document depends on the user’s subscription rights. Reference sections are not available for IEEE conference proceedings and standards, IEEE Computer Society journals and magazines, or IEE journals, magazines, and conference proceedings.
