OPeRA buffs can be deaf as Beethoven.
The name OPeRA comes from Online Periodicals and
Research Area. The service allows on-line viewing and
printing of many subscribed IEEE publications.
The most recent two years of issues are complete with
all illustrations and authors' information.
To a knowledgeable few SSCS members, Internet access to the JSSC is one of the best advantages of society membership. The URL http://www.opera.ieee.org/ allows them to log on and browse the next issue, often before the paper publication arrives by post.
As Dave Hodges at UC at Berkeley commented recently, "Few firms have libraries any more; access to hard copy of back issues is difficult for many working engineers. The full search capability and on line full text access of OPeRA should be very useful to working engineers. I don't think it is widely appreciated."
The JSSC has among OPeRA's highest number of potential users of the on-line service. Internet access to the Journal comes at no additional cost to all 12,500 SSCS members. Despite the fact that JSSC is also registering among IEEE's highest number of monthly log-ons, its potential use is still in its infancy.
