Welcome to the 2008 IEEE/LEOS Summer Topical Meetings!

The LEOS Topicals Series (both Summer and Winter) has established itself as the premier conference for discussing hot topics, research, and networking with technology leaders in an intimate environment.

Due to the great success of the “Optofluidics” Topical in 2006, it gives me great pleasure to announce its inclusion once again for Summer Topicals 2008. This reintroduction of a highly successful topic demonstrates that there is a “series” aspect to the Conference and that LEOS is committed to “Launching the Conferences of Tomorrow.”

For 2008, we are also highlighting. A special Symposium on Photonics in Mexico. This symposium will provide information about the actual problems of photonics addressed in leading Mexican research centers and its solutions.

In addition to the symposium, 5 exciting topics are being highlighted:

• Mitigating Channel Degrading Effects
• Next Generation Transceiver Technologies for Long Haul Optical Communication
• Coherent Optical Communication Systems
• Optofluidics
• Advanced Nanobiophotonics

I would like to personally thank the Topic Chairs and Committee Members who have volunteered and invested their time putting together this conference - inviting speakers, selecting papers, and arranging the program. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the LEOS staff for their professional organization of the conference. And last, but not least, I would like to extend my thanks to the invited and contributed speakers - for it is because of your involvement that this conference series has achieved its esteemed reputation.
