Nanophotonics
Nanophotonics is a field covering technologies where the flow of optical-frequency electromagnetic radiation is engineered in dimensions, or with function-enabling feature-sizes, comparable or smaller than the vacuum wavelength. The exploitation of nanophotonics technology from proof of principle to realizable practical applications encounters considerable challenges in regards to reliability, large scale, low cost manufacturability and social ethics. For instance, the issue of successful integration of photonic components into a miniaturized system at the chip scale is seen as key to significantly reducing the cost of optical components, while the research on nanophotonic devices are essential to achieve such high photonic integration density. Besides photonic integration, nanophotonics also finds itself in many new applications such as lighting, displays, optical sensing, optical storage, optical computing, environmental monitoring, biomedical science and instrumentation, and quantum information.
Research on nanophotonic devices becomes strategic in many countries. The related leading electronics industries have also put significant research efforts on the topic. The aim of this topical meeting is to gather active researchers and front runners in nanophotonics technology to have in-depth presentations to shape the future direction for both industry and academia.
