Nonlinear Dynamics in Photonic Systems

Novel sub-wavelength-featured waveguide structures open up a fundamentally new research activity in the modeling and experimental observation of non-linear light propagation. There is strong recent interest in the study of light localization, spatial solitons and soliton interactions, filamentation and sub-diffractive propagation, non-linear parametric processes in extended photonic structures as well as in nano-scale materials processing using fast laser pulses. However, the understanding of the interplay between light and nanostructures is still often incomplete, and the commercial utility of such structures will require fundamental advances in understanding of how the output of such systems evolves in space and time and how their rich dynamical behavior can, in turn, be made useful.

The meeting goal is to review the world-wide research progress in the above exciting phenomena, devices and applications. The topics to be covered will include:

  • ultra-fast optical pulse dynamics,
  • mode switching dynamics,
  • bifurcation and non-linear dynamical theories,
  • cavity solitons,
  • experimental techniques, fast scanning and high spectral resolution,
  • innovative light sources and all-optical generation,
  • ultra-fast and femtosecond/picosecond pulsating light output,
  • single photon emitters,
  • chaotic optical behavior,
  • non-adiabatic dynamics in high-Q photonic crystal resonators,
  • light propagation phenomena in regular and random structures,
  • materials for nonlinear photonic systems,
  • modeling, design, and fabrication of photonic nano-materials and structures,
  • other related topics.

Papers discussing fundamental studies as well as device applications are solicited.
