History of Standards in Education
- Mid-1990s: engineering education recognized the importance of standards as reflected in the current wording of Criterion 4 of the ABET Engineering Criteria for accreditation of engineering programs, namely: “Students must be prepared for engineering practice through the curriculum culminating in a major design experience based on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier course work and incorporating appropriate engineering standards and multiple realistic constraints.”
- The US National Standards Strategy 2000: called for education about standards
- 2002: American National Standards Institute (ANSI) established committee on education to encourage and create more educational experiences about standards
- 2003: IEEE, in collaboration with the Standards Association (SA), the Educational Activities Board (EAB), established Standards in Education Task Force (SETF) to develop web-based educational products
- 2006: IEEE establishes the Standards Education Committee, a joint committee of the IEEE-SA and the IEEE EAB to replace the Standards in Education Task Force (SETF) to continue the development of the web-based educational products contained within this website and to expand its reach to explore continuing education programs in the area of standards as well

Goal … to help electrical and computer engineering undergraduate programs incorporate standards in their learning processes.
Purpose … to provide learning tools to use in learning about standards and their impact on design and development.
