Case Illustrations

Case Illustrations are examples of the application of standards in a real-world context. Case Illustrations:

  • describe the application of standards to achieve a specific design objective
  • begin with a posed task e.g., consider what standards might be applicable to the design of a multi-mode telephone
  • identify potentially applicable standards
  • determine design and development constraints imposed by standards
  • explore proposed solutions

The following Case Illustrations are currently available online. Click a Case Illustration to begin. To return to this portal, use the “Go To” menu at the top of the Case Illustration pages.

Wireless Router Case Illustration
This Case Illustration explores the effect of standards on the design and development of multi-protocol wireless routers in two phases:

  1. The design of the simplest such router: a home/home office router focusing on IEEE 802.11g wireless protocol standard, and
  2. The design of a multi-protocol router for use in a cellular network to interface with the Internet and other, non-cellular networks.

Multimode Mobile Phone Case Illustration
Design a multi-mode mobile/cellular telephone that will support global roaming for both voice-band and broadband applications and meet applicable regulatory requirements in each country where used. Broadband applications include support of attached devices such as notebook computer as well as for embedded technology such as a high definition digital camera.
