David K. Barton

David K. BartonDavid K. Barton’s work in radar systems has revolutionized aspects of air defense, missile guidance, battlefield surveillance, air traffic control and more. The monopulse instrumentation radar, ballistic missile early warning system, surface-based radar and low-altitude tracking are just some of the areas where he has been most influential. His work on precision range-instrumentation radars several decades ago led to an angle accuracy of 0.1 milliradian—an accuracy that has not been improved upon since.

His books, papers and lectures have helped a generation of design engineers understand the cutting edge in microwave and digital radar technology for both military and civil applications. His reference collection, the Artech Radar Library, includes authoritative books on virtually every aspect of radar. Mr. Barton’s exchanges with European and Russian engineers have been the basis for increased cooperation and understanding among radar experts worldwide. Executive vice president of ANRO Engineering, Inc., Hudson, Mass., he actively participates in U.S. and foreign radar development and systems studies and committees for the U.S. government.

He is an IEEE Fellow and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and he has received many awards, including the IEEE Barry M. Carlton Award, RCA’s David W. Sarnoff Award for Outstanding Achievement in Engineering, and IEEE Centennial and IEEE Third Millennium Medals. He has contributed greatly to the success of the IEEE Aerospace and Electronic Systems Society Radar Systems Panel and helped establish the IEEE International Radar Conference.
