Brian Randell

Brian RandellDr. Brian Randell envisioned a world where software faults were tolerated, rather than avoided. His vision helped to inspire the field of computer system dependability. His pioneering work includes developing the principle of recovery blocks for software fault tolerance. He helped to extend the field of fault-tolerant computing into the broader field of dependable computing and has helped to sustain it as a vital area of research. He co-founded and leads IFIP’s working group 10.4 (Dependable Computing and Fault Tolerance) and, with the IEEE Computer Society, has organized major conferences in this field.

A Fellow of the British Computing Society, he has published 200 papers and four books, and has honorary doctorates from the Université de Rennes and the Institut Polytechnique de Toulouse, France. Dr. Randell is a professor of Computing Science at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom.
