James L. Kirtley
Interdisciplinary skills, depth of knowledge, and exceptional creativity have allowed Dr. James L. Kirtley, Jr. to make monumental contributions to the design, analysis, and construction of high performance rotating electric machinery. From early research in large rotating machines to a pivotal role in the creation of three high-efficiency superconducting turbo generators, his work spans from energy conversion to high-speed transportation. His contribution also includes the monitoring of electric power apparatus and designing large linear electric machines. He is a professor of electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
An IEEE Fellow, Dr. Kirtley has served as chair of the Electric Machinery Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society and is editor-in-chief of the IEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion. He is a member of Sigma Xi and CIGRE.
