**IEEE ELECTION RESULTS TO BE ANNOUNCED FRIDAY**
Results of the annual IEEE election will be announced on Friday, 5 Nov., at noon. You will receive a special issue of LEADERSHIP WIRE at that time.
**E-COMMUNICATION FOR MEMBERS IN EMBARGOED COUNTRIES RE-ESTABLISHED**
The IEEE has re-established electronic communications for members in the embargoed countries of Iran, Sudan and Cuba. Members in these areas can now establish an IEEE Web Account and do the following:
- use their IEEE Web account to access publications online via IEEE Xplore(R)
- renew or reinstate their memberships online
- update contact information online
- obtain an IEEE email alias
IEEE members in embargoed countries also may be considered for various grades of membership. If they choose to organize activities locally, they may access any of the information or guidelines that are available on the Web for all members. Individuals in these countries also may join the IEEE online.
The IEEE continues to be limited by embargoes on sending funds to these areas and in formally establishing local units.

**SEPTEMBER MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS**
IEEE membership totaled 349,436 in September. This is an increase of 1.6 percent compared to September 2003. Specifically, higher grade memberships increased 0.6 percent to 287,078; student memberships grew 6.9 percent to 62,358; and society memberships declined 5.4 percent to 352,913.
For complete details, read the Membership Development Report at http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/mdprogrpt.html.
**TAB REVISES TECHNICAL INTEREST PROFILE CODES FOR MEMBERS**
The Technical Activities Board has revised the IEEE Technical Interest Profile (TIP) codes to better capture the technical interests of IEEE members.
The new TIP structure includes a move to a Web-based system that allows members to select the broad technical interest area of an IEEE organizational unit and include more specific technical interests.
This setup allows for a list of codes that span many technical areas and are shared by multiple IEEE organizational units. In addition, these shared codes allow for the easy identification of members with common cross-technical interests.
Current member TIP codes have been migrated to the new corresponding codes, so volunteers will no longer be able to pull lists using the old TIP coding scheme.
Members can update their profile codes online once a year during renewal, or at any time via the IEEE Change of Profile application at http://www.ieee.org/portal/site/mainsite/menuitem.818c0c39e85ef176fb2275875bac26c8/index.jsp?&pName=corp_level1&path=membership&file=coa.xml&xsl=generic.xsl.

**IN THE NEWS**
The IEEE, its members, and its products and services are mentioned frequently in journalists' reports on technology and the engineering profession. Here are just a few recent references.
28 Oct. -- THE TIMES OF OMAN (http://www.timesofoman.com/newsdetails.asp?newsid=4095&pn=local) announced the inauguration of the IEEE student branch at the CaledonianCollege of Engineering. Noting that it also is the second student branch in the country of Oman, the story lauded IEEE student branches for giving students the opportunity to meet and learn from fellow students and professionals in the fields of electrical, electronic and computer engineering.
25 Oct. -- THE TIMES REPUBLICAN (http://www.timesrepublican.com/columns/story/1014202004_colcol.asp) of Iowa credited the IEEE with stopping a copyright piracy bill in the U.S. Congress that would have outlawed any device used to make copies of copyright-protected work. In the story, the IEEE said the bill would create a flood of litigation that would damage the consumer electronics, information technology and Internet products sectors of the U.S. economy. Other stories on the topic also ran in THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER and WIRED.
4 Oct. -- SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN (http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?articleID=000F287C-46FF-115C-84BE83414B7FFE9F) named the IEEEVirtualMuseum a recipient of its 2004 Engineering & Technology Web Award. The article said the Web site was beautifully designed "featuring a cornucopia of exhibits encompassing topics as wide-ranging as microelectronics, women and technology, and microwaves."
In September and October, four IEEE Technical Field Award recipients were feted by trade, local and other media. The following is a list of the recipients, their awards and the publications where they were cited.
- Tony England -- 2004 IEEE Judith A. Resnik Award -- QST (the magazine of the Amateur Radio Relay League)
- David Fogel -- 2004 IEEE Kiyo Tomiaysu Award -- AI MAGAZINE and LA JOLLA LIGHT (Calif.)
- Tso Ping Ma -- 2005 IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award -- THE YALE DAILY NEWS and EUREKALERT
- Richard L. Nailen -- 2004 IEEE Richard Harold Kaufmann Award -- ELECTRICAL APPARATUS
