**IEEE MEMBERSHIP HIGHLIGHTS**
IEEE membership totaled 300,258 in February, a 0.5 percent increase from February 2004. Higher grade memberships declined 0.4 percent to 246,185, while student memberships grew 4.4 percent to 54,073. Affecting membership statistics last month was the annual service terminator, which canceled memberships for those individuals who have not yet renewed for 2005 and removed from the list life members who have not yet returned a renewal profile.
For details, read the February Membership Development Progress Report at http://www.ieee.org/organizations/rab/md/mdprogrpt.html.
**UPDATES TO IEEE WEB SITE**
- The 2004 ANNUAL STATISTICS OF THE IEEE are available online at http://www.ieee.org/organizations/corporate/secrpt/. The report is accessible from the "Volunteer Resources" or "About the IEEE" pages on the IEEE Web site. An IEEE Web Account is required.
- A NEW EXPENSE REPORT FORM is available on the "Volunteer Resources" page of the IEEE Web site. For overseas travelers and volunteers, the new form includes the option of using either kilometers or miles in the auto-usage field. The rest of the form may be completed in any currency; totals will be calculated according to the entered exchange rate. The reimbursement amount will be reflected in U.S. dollars and in the foreign currency to allow non-U.S. volunteers the option of being reimbursed in their local currency. For more information, contact Judy Covino, IEEE Controller's Office, at +1 732 562 5384, or Jian Jiang, IEEE Controller's Office, at +1 732 562 5562.
- The IEEE BYLAWS AND POLICIES on the IEEE Web site have been updated to include the revisions approved by the IEEE Board of Directors at its meeting in February. To access the IEEE Bylaws, visit http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/about/whatis/bylaws/index.html. For the IEEE Policies, visit http://www.ieee.org/portal/pages/about/whatis/policies/index.html.
**SAMSUNG TO SPONSOR IEEE EDISON MEDAL**
Samsung Electronics Co. has agreed to sponsor the IEEE Edison Medal from 2006 through 2015. Created in 1904 by a group of Thomas Edison's friends and associates, this medal may be presented to an individual for a career of meritorious achievement in electrical science, electrical engineering or electrical arts. Prize items include a US$10,000 honorarium, gold medal, gold pendant and certificate.
Samsung joins Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, Sony, IBM, Lucent Technologies and others as a sponsor of the IEEE Awards program. For more information on IEEE Awards, visit http://www.ieee.org/awards.
**IEEE VIRTUAL MUSEUM LAUNCHES EXHIBIT ON ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENTS**
The IEEE Virtual Museum has launched its latest exhibit, "Songs in the Key of E," which explores the numerous ways electronics have been used to create music. With examples such as the singing arc, the theremin and the synthesizer, the exhibit highlights both the inventors of electronic instruments and the instruments themselves, and uses audio clips to demonstrate the various sounds.
This is the eighth IEEE Virtual Museum exhibit since its launch in 2002. Aimed at pre-college students and their educators, the museum explores the global impact of electrical and information sciences and technologies to demonstrate how relevant engineers are to society.
Visit the museum at http://www.ieee.org/museum.
**APPLY FOR THE NEW IEEE CREDIT CARD**
U.S. members can now apply online for the new IEEE credit card, a U.S. Bank Visa(R) that replaces the Bank One card as the official credit card of the IEEE. Card holders have no annual fee, a low introductory interest rate and their choice of three programs -- the IEEE Visa Platinum, IEEE Cash Back Visa Platinum and IEEE Travel Rewards Visa Platinum.
For more information, visit IEEE Financial Advantage at http://www.ieee.org/fap.
**NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR 2005 RAB AWARDS**
The IEEE Regional Activities Board (RAB) is currently accepting nominations for the following awards:
*William W. Middleton Distinguished Service Award
*Outstanding Large & Small Section Award
*RAB Achievement Award
*RAB GOLD (Graduates Of the Last Decade) Achievement Award
*RAB Innovation Award
*RAB Leadership Award
*RAB Larry K. Wilson Transnational Award

**ADS ON HALF-YEAR DUES, SOCIETY MEMBERSHIPS IN PROMO LIBRARY**
Graphics that help promote half-year membership dues and the value of IEEE society memberships are available free of charge to IEEE Web page owners from the IEEE Online Promotion Library. The library contains hundreds of ads that support IEEE products, publications and services. They may be used in any IEEE publication, newsletter or Web page, including society or conference sites.

**IN THE NEWS**
The IEEE, its members, and its products and services are mentioned frequently in journalists’ reports on technology and the engineering profession. Here are just a few recent references.
8 March -- TECHNOLOGY NEWS DAILY (http://wwww.technologynewsdaily.com/node/293) noted Rod C Alferness, senior vice president, Optical Networking and Photonics Research, had received he 2005 IEEE Photonics Award for his "seminal contributions to enabling photonics technologies and for visionary leadership in their application to networks and systems." The story was also published by the M2 Presswire.
March -- AMERICAN TEACHER (circ. 1,000,000) noted that the IEEE is currently accepting nominations for the 2005 Pre-College Educator Award, presented to teachers who encourage students to pursue careers in math, science technology and engineering, and gave the IEEE Educational Activities web page for obtaining nomination details. A similar announcement ran in the VIRGINIA JOURNAL OF EDUCATION and SCIENCE SCOPE magazine.
21 Feb. -- RCR WIRELESS NEWS (circ. 40,086) reported the International Electrical Commission (IEC) had published the first global standard for testing mobile-phone compliance with radiation safety guidelines. The article noted the standard -- IEC 62209-1 -- was developed jointly by the IEC and the IEEE. The same day, RF Globalnet (www.rfglobalnet.com) published a similar article.
15 Feb. -- CONTRA COSTA (CA) TIMES (www.contracostatimes.com) reported on local schools utilizing the TOPS (Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science) program, in which retired engineers and scientists volunteer to teach science. The article quoted Moshe Kam, IEEE vice president for technical activities, who said, "We need to increase the propensity of young people to select an engineering career path, and we can’t wait until college to do that."
10 Feb. – THE NEW YORK TIMES -- Both the New York City (circ: 1,110,279) and National (circ: 248,860) editions said that in late December (2004), the IEEE had published a set of voluntary standards for power-saving modes on personal computers and "largely crafted" by Bruce Nordman of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. The proposed standard names, symbols and colors represent PCs' power states, with the goal of saving energy by reducing user confusion over power-saving modes.
